It's not clear to me what I'm supposed to be seeing here. I see some kind of wooden structure on top of some masonry. I don't think that Neanderthals had figured out stone masonry, or carpentry. Is the hole the point of the picture? Maybe Neanderthals lived in the hole, and it was later fortified with bricks?
