Premise

edit

According to the ABC Weekly, Mary Reibey

has gone down in Australian history as a girl who was transported from England for the trumpery offence of stealing a ride on a horse, and saved from the humiliations of a convict's life by having the luck to interest an officer on the ship bringing her to Sydney. When the officer married her, her whole prospect was changed, and Mary Reibey was to live a life which spanned more than half of the story of New South Wales and to fulfil her early efforts as the first woman trader in the growing colony. Rex Rienits... has reconstructed the life and times of Mary Reibey, the narrative being unfolded by one of her sons. It is a tale of pluck and initiative at a time when business life was almost wholly denied to women.[2]
