The reservoir has a capacity of 27,000 ML (950 million cu ft). It was opened 18 April 1973 and is now managed by Melbourne Water.[1] The reservoir was designed to supply drinking water to Melbourne's northern and western suburbs.[2][3]
The Greenvale Reservoir Park, to the south and west of the dam, contained picnic tables, a playground and barbecues, and is managed by Parks Victoria. The park was closed in 2014, because of the need for work to strengthen the dam wall.[4] Although the remedial work has been completed, most of the park remains closed,[5] despite occasional promises to reopen it.[6] The northern section is open to pedestrian traffic.[7]
