James Hutson (academic)

James L. Hutson (born July 21, 1979) is an American academic and professor known for his contributions to artificial intelligence, art history, and archeology. He is currently a professor and department head of art history and visual culture at Lindenwood University. Hutson is recognized for his efforts in integrating technology and traditional educational methodologies and his leadership in promoting AI literacy. Hutson is also an internationally known keynote on AI, neurodiversity, neurohumanities, art, Culture, and XR.

Early life and education

Hutson was born on July 21, 1979, in Pryor, Oklahoma. He pursued his education across multiple disciplines. He began his higher education with an Associate of Arts degree from Rogers State University in 1999, followed by a Bachelor of Arts in Art from the University of Tulsa in 2001. He furthered his studies in Art History, earning a Master's degree from Southern Methodist University in 2003 and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2008.

Hutson completed his master’s in Leadership and Game Design from Lindenwood University in 2021 and 2022, respectively. He obtained a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence from Capitol Technology University in 2023. Hutson also has completed several certifications in the field of education and artificial intelligence.

Career

Hutson started his career in 2006 as a visiting adjunct professor. He worked at the University of Maryland, American University, and Towson University before joining the School of Fine and Performing Arts, Lindenwood University, as an assistant professor in 2010. He was then promoted to Associate professor and became the program director.

Hutson has held various academic and administrative positions throughout his career. Since 2021, he has been a professor and the Department Head of Art History and Visual Culture at Lindenwood University. His responsibilities include directing grants and fundraising, chairing the Art History, Pre-Art Therapy, and Pre-Art Conservation programs, and sponsoring the Kappa Pi International Honorary Art Fraternity.

In addition to his academic roles, Hutson is a Lead XR Disruptor and Director of Technology at Manu MediSoft (MMSMETA) and an AI Education Consultant for SimpliAssess. He is also a Research Fellow at INTI International University in Malaysia and an expert in collaborative residence at the Regenerative Artificial Intelligence Lab, CrowdDoing.world.

Hutson has published extensively on AI, XR, and education topics. He has been featured in the EDUCAUSE Horizon Report: Teaching and Learning Edition (2023) and has contributed to research on generative AI and XR in education.

He has been featured in publications such as Marquis Who's Who in America and The Knowledge Review, which named him one of the "Top 5 Remarkable Men in Education-2023."

Hutson's contributions to education and AI have also been highlighted in various media outlets, including Smith Mountain Lake News, T52, KMOV 4, and Open Access Government. His vision for balancing tradition and innovation in education was recognized by CIO Leaders in their 2023 edition of Visionary Leaders Bringing Ideas in Education & Research.
