It is located in the region of Pirkanmaa. The municipality has a population of 1,694 (31 October 2024)[2] and covers an area of 390.50 square kilometres (150.77 sq mi) of which 33.39 km2 (12.89 sq mi) is water.[1] The population density is 4.74 inhabitants per square kilometre (12.3/sq mi).

The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
