editChristian Democracy was the largest party and, narrowly ahead of the Italian Communist Party. After the election, Christian Democrat Gianni Dagnino formed a government comprising the Italian Socialist Party, the Unitary Socialist Party and the Italian Republican Party (organic centre-left).
