Notes
edit- ^ Lagat's 2004 time of 3:27.40, achieved a few months after his naturalization as an American citizen with dual Kenyan citizenship, was ratified by the USATF as a national record of the United States (in 2018).[17] By logic, given this time was faster than the current ratified NACAC area record, this should also be the NACAC area record, but the time was never ratified by NACAC. NACAC only ratified Lagat's 2005 time of 3:29.30 as an area record, which has since been broken by Yared Nuguse and Cole Hocker, in 3:29.02 and 3:27.65 respectively. Hocker's time, when ratified, will be the new area record since Lagat's 3:27.40 was never ratified by NACAC, but is not the national record given USATF's ratification of the 3:27.40 time. Lagat's lifetime best of 3:26.34 in 2001 was achieved prior to his naturalization as an American citizen, and is therefore a Kenyan national record as opposed to an American record.
