Though O'Brien claimed four years of service, more recent research included in Damian Shiel's book Irish in the American Civil War (2013) puts his known enlistment date as 15 May 1864, almost a full year after the battle. For this reason, the penultimate veteran mentioned by Dr. Hoar is included in this article.
