Mark Abrahams (born 1958) is an American fashion and portrait photographer known for his raw, black-and-white celebrity portraits.[1] His work has been featured in Bazaar,[2] Glamour, GQ, The New York Times Magazine,[3] V, Vanity Fair, and Vogue.[4][5][6]
Early life
editBorn in Santa Ana, California, Abrahams discovered photography after receiving a Nikon FM camera. In the 1980s, he worked as a truck driver while developing film in a darkroom he set up at home.[7][8] By the 1990s, he began photographing musicians and supermodels, with his work appearing in international editions of Vogue and GQ.[8][9]
Career
editAbrahams' work has appeared in Harper's Bazaar, Glamour, GQ, Vanity Fair, Interview Magazine, and more. In 2015, he photographed Sharon Stone and Allison Williams for Harper's Bazaar.[10][11] He has contributed over 630 editorial photographs featured in various fashion magazines and journals.[12] He explains that in his portrait and editorial work, “The intent of it is to strip away all the norms and expectations and get to the heart of the matter."[3]
Abrahams has photographed celebrities such as Julianne Moore, George Clooney, and Michelle Obama.[4][5][9][13] He has worked on campaigns for brands like L'Oreal (featuring Susan Sarandon),[14][15][16] Avon,[17] Neiman Marcus,[18] Converse,[19] Warner Brother's Pictures,[20] Barclay's Bank,[21] and Omega.[22][23] His work has been exhibited internationally, including the Jaguar Summer Museum in Moscow in an exhibition "Two Colors".[24][25]
Publications
editIn 2011, Abrahams released a book of black-and-white portraits, Mark Abrahams, which was launched by Annie Lebovitz.[8][26][27][28][29] "Annie said that when she looks at [his] images, she sees the person and not the celebrity".[29]
