Edit interface request on 29 January 2014

edit

Please create this page with the following content so that I can request a new edit filter that will warn and disallow user that do not have the userrights required (sysop) to change the protection level on a page to remove the appropriate tags declaring that protection level:

Thanks in advance. Technical 13 (talk) 18:38, 29 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Do we really need an edit filter for this? Is it really a problem? Jackmcbarn (talk) 20:05, 29 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Yes, it came up on IRC in -help (which in turn had helpers asking about it in -helpers and -en). Someone was befuddled that the move tab/link was missing from the page after deleting the template... I'm sure the filter could be better written (it's my first one, and it has been tested to work in the most basic sense on testwiki), and I'm not opposed to modifying the wording for the warning if anyone has suggestions. • I think this is a solution looking for a problem. This is the first I've ever heard of that. (What I see all the time is people adding the templates to pages that aren't protected, which we can't really block, since it's usually from users using an existing page as a base for their new page.) Also, you marked the filter private, so I can't see what you did for it (I'm not a sysop there). Jackmcbarn (talk) 21:37, 29 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
  •   Not done: I also don't think that this is really necessary. We have bots that can re-add protection templates if they get removed, so there's already a check in place. Also, edit filters have to be checked for every single edit made to the site, so they should only be used when they are really necessary, in my opinion. At any rate, really we need a consensus that a filter like this would be a good idea before I would be comfortable fulfilling this request, otherwise the notice will just end up being deleted. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 07:49, 30 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
