MediaWiki talk:Block-autoblock-exemptionlist

(Redirected from MediaWiki talk:Autoblock whitelist)
Latest comment: 3 years ago by JJMC89 in topic Add new WMF range

This page adds the listed IP addresses to a whitelist, meaning that those IP addresses will not be autoblocked. In other words, a blocked user who attempts to edit from one of the IP addresses will not trigger the autoblock for that IP address. Flcelloguy (A note?) 23:33, 27 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Just FYI: For help, it may be worth seeing m:CIDR. When adding a single IP address, I've been advised that specifying a range of /32 (one address) is a good idea. Luna Santin 09:04, 1 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

After some testing, it doesn't seem that the "single IP" (/32) listings are working properly. I've notified devs, hopefully they'll be able to figure it out. Luna Santin 19:19, 8 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Has this been resolved yet? It would be nice to know the Qatar IP address isn't going to be affected by any more autoblocks – Gurch 22:43, 12 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please add User talk:218.186.9.1. Someone got autoblocked on here, and I've seen at least 3 users with collateral in the past few hours. Part Deux 15:04, 21 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Done; 218.186.9.0/24 was already on there, but I'm not sure ranges are working properly yet. Proto  20:26, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Addition request

edit

Can we add 194.176.105.40 to this list? It is one of a very small handful of IPs which act as the public proxy for N3 which is the private network of the UK's national health service. As such it represents tens of thousands of individual machines & users. It was recently autoblocked and there was a lot of collateral damage as a result. Thanks AulaTPN 22:06, 19 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Collateral damage

edit

My, it's been 11 years since anyone edited this thread?

In the last 3 days, I have twice been a victim of collateral damage. In the 1st case, I emailed the blocking admin User:Tegel but have still had no response. In the 2nd case, I could not email the blocking admin User:Vituzzu because their email is closed.

Fortunately, I know another admin or two, and another editor pointed me towards UTRS

I am lucky. I knew who to ask. Most victims of collateral damage will not. Narky Blert (talk) 22:44, 23 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

The blocking interface was significantly updated in the last 11 years @Narky Blert: alleviating most of the need to update this. Blocked users here should also be getting fairly obvious warning notices, with directions on them as to how to request an unblock. Based on the names you listed, it sounds like you are running afoul of global blocks, as these users are stewards and not English Wikipedia admins. Did you happen to get a screen shot or remember what error you were shown when trying use the English Wikipedia during your trouble? — xaosflux Talk 02:33, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Xaosflux: It wasn't just English Wikipedia. It was all Wikis. There were no prior warnings. Copies of the messages:
(1) You do not have permission to edit this page, for the following reason:
Your IP address is in a range which has been blocked on all wikis.
The block was made by Tegel (meta.wikimedia.org). The reason given is Long-term abuse.
Start of block: 13:43, 19 May 2018
Expiration of block: 13:43, 22 May 2018
You can contact Tegel to discuss the block. You cannot use the "Email this user" feature unless a valid email address is specified in your account preferences and you have not been blocked from using it. Your current IP address is 148.252.129.83, and the blocked range is 148.252.129.0/24. Please include all above details in any queries you make.
(2) Your IP address is in a range which has been blocked on all wikis.
The block was made by Vituzzu (meta.wikimedia.org). The reason given is Long-term abuse.
Start of block: 23:32, 18 May 2018
Expiration of block: 23:32, 18 August 2018
You can contact Vituzzu to discuss the block. You cannot use the "Email this user" feature unless a valid email address is specified in your account preferences and you have not been blocked from using it. Your current IP address is 85.255.234.36, and the blocked range is 85.255.234.0/23. Please include all above details in any queries you make.
I took those messages at face value, and did not even try to edit in those non-English Wikis where I have created "hi there!" accounts; such as fr:Utilisateur:Narky Blert, it:Utente:Narky Blert, nl:Gebruiker:Narky Blert, and pt:Usuário(a):Narky Blert.
(1) I emailed User:Tegel about my problem on 20 May 2018. I do not have a timestamp. I have had no response.
(2) I have not been in contact with User:Vituzzu. That editor's email is closed.
I was unable to post {{unblock}} on my Talk Page per WP:UNBLOCK on either occasion because I could not even edit my own Talk Page.
(1) 9 hours and 5 emails, including to an admin (User:BD2412) I happen to know, solved the problem.
(2) I think it was UTRS that did the trick - and how many editors know of THAT? (I didn't, until 3 days ago.)
I have no idea why my IP seems to be wandering around. I have never used a VPN such as Hoxx or TOR, because I consider them against the spirit of Wiki.
The "start" timestamps are inconsistent. (1) I edited my sandbox something like 6 hours after that timestamp. (2) Yes - it does indeed say 18 May. I edited happily until 22(?) May before I was hit with that nonsense.
I repeat: I happened to know enough to who to call for help to overcome those two problems. What about those editors who do not? Yrs. Narky Blert (talk) 04:44, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Whether or not you know those languages, you should get the drift. I tentatively suggest that there might be a lack of precision in those blocks. I haven't checked all the languages which I have edited (which IIRC also include German and Spanish). Narky Blert (talk) 05:03, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Narky Blert: the scope of those blocks is outside of the English Wikipedia, as is the interface messaging on other wiki's. however the message you saw should have been this: MediaWiki:Globalblocking-blocked or MediaWiki:Globalblocking-ipblocked, with directions where to make your appeal at: meta:Steward requests/Global. Was that part not displayed to you? — xaosflux Talk 10:31, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
Update, perhaps you saw this message: MediaWiki:Globalblocking-ipblocked-range, which has not been customized here. I can update the text of that to include the appeal information. — xaosflux Talk 10:37, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
It's still a problem coming from Meta. I see plenty of notices on the talk pages of the stewards there indicating that these rangeblocks have caught other innocent people by surprise. bd2412 T 11:09, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Xaosflux and BD2412: I posted the complete messages which I saw. I did not see any of the four links which Xaosflux posted just above.
I am pleased to be able to report that I can now edit articles (not just my own pages) in frwiki, itwiki, nlwiki and ptwiki again. Narky Blert (talk) 11:24, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
I just updated the message to look like this: MediaWiki:Globalblocking-ipblocked-range, the best appeal path for stewards' range blocks is at the stewards' link there. — xaosflux Talk 11:26, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
For the record, I posted a request to unblock NB on that very noticeboard. It apparently went ignored until the matter was resolved through different channels, so I removed the post. I think the bottom line is that it is highly irresponsible for any steward to impose massive rangeblocks and then disappear or become inaccessible, nor should the project allow massive rangeblocks to be imposed without some clear and fast method for their removal in the event of error, preferably one that allows for affected editors to post on their own home project talk pages, and for local admins to remove the block on that project. bd2412 T 11:42, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Bd2412: sounds like a good follow up discussion for meta:Stewards' noticeboard. — xaosflux Talk 12:05, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
Please do bring it up there; this is a broader issue that deserves some discussion. -- Ajraddatz (talk) 17:25, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Ajraddatz, BD2412, and Xaosflux: It goes without saying that I accept anything decided at WP:ADMIN level or higher.
I ask this question: I am an experienced enough English-language editor to know how to raise a stink. What about those other English-language editors who do not? what about those editors on non-English Wikis who may also have been caught up in this? Narky Blert (talk) 23:10, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
while we have a "pretty" message, the default message does include the name of the steward that applied the block, and link to contact them that should be going to their account at meta: where the gipblock does not normally apply. You could also follow up at the stewards noticeboard, if they agree to change the default message to include more information a software request can push it to everywhere that does not have a customized message like we do (now). — xaosflux Talk 23:26, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Xaosflux: in my problem case, it did not. I had no way of contacting that steward. Which is one main reason why I have been sounding off here. Narky Blert (talk) 23:39, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Narky Blert: in the "The block was made by Tegel (meta.wikimedia.org)." message - was there not a link to the account on meta? — xaosflux Talk 23:45, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Xaosflux: no there was not. Narky Blert (talk) 23:48, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
OK, same note as above, start a discussion about how the messaging can be improved on all projects at meta:Stewards'_noticeboard, we fixed it for the English Wikipedia now. — xaosflux Talk 23:53, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Xaosflux: you do it, then. I am not an admin, and have no desire to become one. Narky Blert (talk) 00:07, 25 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
Can an editor who is globally blocked still post on a talk page at meta? I would note, by the way, that the steward who instituted the most recent problematic rangeblock has a note on their own talk page stating that they are often out, and it is better to go to the notice board (where I posted, and received no response in the 10-12 hours the post was there). It is mindboggling to me that someone would be empowered to make a potentially tremendous mess, with no apparent responsibility to even monitor its effects. bd2412 T 02:57, 25 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@BD2412: yes, meta: is exempt from global ip blocks. — xaosflux Talk 03:03, 25 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

. Heigh-ho, my block on frwiki has reappeared.

(If anyone would like to make the edit, the hatnote in fr:Robert Martin contains a circular link. It should be piped as Robert Martin (homonymie){{!}}Robert Martin) Narky Blert (talk) 14:47, 25 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Also, there's a bad link to fr:Robert Martin in fr:Stéphane Blet. It should be to fr:Éditions musicales Robert Martin. That article looks as if it should be added to fr:Robert Martin (homonymie) in a "Voir aussi" section. Narky Blert (talk) 14:57, 25 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
I've exempted your account from global blocks for the time being. -- Ajraddatz (talk) 16:47, 25 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Ajraddatz: TY! :-D I've now made those edits on frwiki. Let us all hope that by the time your exemption expires, those cross-Wiki vandals will have given up and/or curled up and died. Narky Blert (talk) 19:48, 25 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
Dropping another stone into this muddy puddle - what is this meta of which you speak? I had never heard of it before I got hit with these ridiculous blocks. (I know for certain that I have just posted a silly link, and that I should perhaps have linked to meta, whatever that site might be; but, that is above my pay grade. It is not my problem. It needs admins or higher to resolve what may be a global issue.) Narky Blert (talk) 21:58, 27 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Narky Blert: there are hundreds of Wikimedia Foundation projects, the English Wikipedia is one of them - discussions here on the English Wikipedia are mostly limited in scope to this project. Our community administrator have no ability to do anything with say the Spanish Wikipedia or the Russian Wikitionary, nor do their community administrators have the ability to do things here. There are some issues that can impact all projects (such as global ip blocks), and all of these issues are handled at the Meta wiki. Specifically to this page: its primary purpose is to add exemptions for only the English Wikipedia for global ip blocks that apply to every other project. It isn't used much anymore, as it is part of an older system of dealing with certain problems and there are more advanced options now available. — xaosflux Talk 14:35, 28 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
I cannot even remember how I found this page. I was flailing around wildly during and after having been hit by a global IP block, where I could find no Wiki page on which I could post anything at all. 9 wasted hours. My complaint here was posted after I found a backdoor way to get that global block partially lifted.
I repeat. I am a moderately knowledgable user. I ask this question. How many editors, in all languages, who haven't even the first idea where to look for help, have been driven off Wikipedia by this sort of heavy-handed indiscriminate global action, and will never come back? Narky Blert (talk) 21:56, 28 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
Great questions, I have no idea. And please keep in mind, you are only discussing this on the English Wikipedia. We have made an adjustment here based on your feedback. We can only do anything here about the English Wikipedia. If you want to have a discussion about the global impacts, links have already been provided above where to follow up. — xaosflux Talk 22:52, 28 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
