Tanjiro Kamado

edit
Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae,[1] Satomi Satō (child)[2] (Japanese); Zach Aguilar,[3] Allegra Clark (child)[4] (English)
Tanjiro Kamado (竈門 炭治郎, Kamado Tanjirō) is the oldest son of charcoal sellers Tanjuro and Kie, whose family was killed by Muzan Kibutsuji while he was away selling charcoal; his sister Nezuko survived, but was turned into a demon. Since then, his goal has been to find a cure for her and turn her back into a human; to this end, he decides to become a Demon Slayer. He initially trains under Sakonji Urokodaki to learn the "Water Breathing" (水の呼吸, Mizu no kokyū) style; he later begins using his family's "Hinokami Kagura" (ヒノカミ神楽, lit. Dance of the Fire God), based on the original breathing style, "Sun Breathing" (日の呼吸, Hi no kokyū), eventually utilizing both to create a more sustainable fighting style. He is pure and kind-hearted, always looking after his comrades' well-being and sympathizing with the plight of demons while understanding that their actions cannot be forgiven. His optimism and honesty allow most to enjoy his company, though it also puts him at odds with certain personalities. Tanjiro has a heightened sense of smell, which allows him to detect demons and evade their attacks as well as determine people's true emotions. His skull is exceptionally thick and his headbutts can be used in confrontations. He wields a black sword which occasionally turns crimson red; the change in color is later revealed to be an ability that slows the regeneration of demons. Though he eventually avenges his family during the final battle, he loses his left arm and right eye in the process and is fatally wounded. Both are restored during Muzan's attempt to turn him into his successor by transforming him into a demon, though with the aid of his friends, his humanity is restored.

Nezuko Kamado

edit
Voiced by: Akari Kitō[1] (Japanese); Abby Trott[3] (English)
Nezuko Kamado (竈門 禰豆子, Kamado Nezuko) is the second child and oldest daughter of Tanjuro and Kie, who was turned into a demon during the massacre of her family and survived despite Muzan assuming that he failed to sire a sunlight-resistant demon. She serves as motivation and support for Tanjiro, who becomes a Demon Slayer to find a way to turn her back to normal. Though her mind was lost, she retains enough of her memories to keep herself from killing Tanjiro. After two years of hypnotic conditioning by Sakonji, Nezuko regards all humans as her family and will mercilessly attack any demons who threaten them. Instead of consuming human flesh, Nezuko regains energy from sleep, doing so for long periods of time after overexerting herself. Initially, she is unable to speak and wears a bamboo muzzle which Giyu Tomioka gave her to prevent her from biting others. The muzzle is later removed and she regains her speech, albeit broken due to not speaking for more than two years. Nezuko has the usual powers of demons, including regeneration, potent strength, and changing her physical structure, as well as a Blood Demon Art called "Exploding Blood" (爆血, Bakketsu) that causes her blood to burn at will. Tanjiro generally carries her around in a wooden box, which was a gift from Sakonji, until she develops the ability to survive exposure to sunlight, with Muzan targeting her soon after. Nezuko's mind and humanity are eventually restored during the final battle against Muzan.

Zenitsu Agatsuma

edit
Voiced by: Hiro Shimono[5] (Japanese); Aleks Le[3] (English)
Zenitsu Agatsuma (我妻 善逸, Agatsuma Zen'itsu) is a cowardly boy who was forced to join the Demon Slayer Corps around the same time as Tanjiro in order to pay off his debts. He serves as comic relief, with his flighty personality serving as a contrast to Tanjiro's steadfast determination. He trained in the "Thunder Breathing" (雷の呼吸, Kaminari no kokyū) style with the former Thunder Hashira, but was only able to learn the first form; as a result, he often belittles himself despite being highly skilled. He has accompanied Tanjiro since joining him on a mission, partially out of his love for Nezuko, but also due to recognizing Tanjiro's honesty and kindness. His cowardly personality initially hinders him and he is only able to fight when unconscious or asleep, but he later learns to overcome his fears and take action when necessary. He wields a yellow sword with a lightning bolt design. He has a heightened sense of hearing, which allows him to distinguish a person's true character by the sound of their heartbeat and to track demons.

Inosuke Hashibira

edit
Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka[5] (Japanese); Bryce Papenbrook[3] (English)
Inosuke Hashibira (嘴平 伊之助, Hashibira Inosuke) is a boy who was raised by wild boars and taught to speak by an old man after his mother, Kotoha, sacrificed herself to save him from Doma, the Upper Rank Two. He is illiterate as a result of his upbringing and often forgets or mispronounces names. He uses a self-taught style called "Beast Breathing" (獣の呼吸, Kedamono no kokyū) and dual wields two indigo-gray serrated swords; when he gets new swords, he purposely chips them to match his preferences and fighting style. He is brash and prone to violence, and while appearing to be dim, has proven himself in battle. He normally hides his face behind a mask made from the head of his deceased boar mother, which he wears to honor her. When he first meets Tanjiro, he is initially hostile towards him, but they become friends as they fight together. He attends Final Selection at the same time as Tanjiro and Zenitsu and, unbeknownst to most, was the first to clear it. He has a heightened sense of touch, which allows him to locate enemies by feeling vibrations in the air.

Kanao Tsuyuri

edit
Voiced by: Reina Ueda[6] (Japanese); Brianna Knickerbocker[7] (English)
Kanao Tsuyuri (栗花落 カナヲ, Tsuyuri Kanao) is a girl who joined the Demon Slayer Corps at the same time as Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke. She is the adoptive sister of Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira, and is trained as her Tsuguko, a successor to a Hashira. She uses the "Flower Breathing" (花の呼吸, Hana no kokyū) style. Despite being a skilled fighter, she struggles to function without other's orders as a result of growing up in a poor, abusive household and being sold as a slave, leading her to shut off her emotions to cope. Even after Shinobu and Kanae rescued her and took her in, she would only act when ordered; Kanae gave her a coin to flip and use when she struggled to make decisions, which she relies on until Tanjiro befriends her and convinces her to stick to her intuition. Over time, she develops feelings for Tanjiro, to the point of risking her life to help save him when he is turned into a demon. She wields a light pink sword and possesses a heightened sense of sight that allows her to analyze and dodge attacks; after straining herself overusing this ability during her fight with Doma, it causes her to become blind in one eye. She is later revealed to have married Tanjiro, having two great-great-grandsons: Kanata and Sumihiko.

Genya Shinazugawa

edit
Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto[8] (Japanese); Zeno Robinson[9] (English)
Genya Shinazugawa (不死川 玄弥, Shinazugawa Gen'ya) is another Demon Slayer who joins at the same time as Tanjiro. He is harsh, independent, and obsessed with killing demons but mellows out later on when he fights alongside Tanjiro to save the Swordsmith Village. Unlike other Demon Slayers, he is unable to use breathing techniques or traditional sword fighting styles; instead he consumes parts of the demons he fights, which, through his special digestive system, allows him to temporarily gain their powers. How strong he becomes varies on the strength of the demon he devours, and this also makes him vulnerable to a demon's weaknesses. He wields a hand-held shotgun that fires special shot made with the same steel as the Demon Slayers' Nichirin sword, as well as a Nichirin wakizashi. He is the younger brother of Sanemi, the Wind Hashira, who shuns him but is unaware that he wants him to live a normal life. After Genya is mortally wounded in the battle against Kokushibo, he reconciles with his brother before dying. In the Reiwa Era, he and his brother are reincarnated as police officers.

Demons

edit

Demons (, Oni) are a race of immortal creatures that feeds on blood to survive and become stronger with each human they devour. All demons were formerly humans who lost most of their memories and traces of humanity after drinking or being injected with Muzan's blood, becoming his servants and sharing their vision and thoughts with him. Demons possess enhanced senses, regeneration, and physical abilities. Higher demons are also capable of casting powerful spells called Blood Demon Arts (血鬼術, Kekkijutsu), which are unique to each demon.

Demons are weak to sunlight, which fatally turns them into ashes upon being exposed to it. They can also be killed by decapitation with special swords used by the Demon Slayers called Nichirin Swords (日輪刀, Nichirin Tō). Demons are also vulnerable to wisteria flowers, avoiding places where they are abundant and wisteria extract being poisonous to them in sufficient doses.

Muzan Kibutsuji

edit
Voiced by: Toshihiko Seki[32] (Japanese); Greg Chun[33] (English)
Muzan Kibutsuji (鬼舞辻 無惨, Kibutsuji Muzan) was the first and strongest demon in existence. He was originally a sickly young man who lived during the Heian period, who was turned into a demon as a result of an experimental treatment intended to save his life. Since then, he has dedicated himself to using his blood to sire demons in an effort to create a demon immune to sunlight. This goal motivates him to attack Tanjiro's family in an attempt to turn them into demons, and after Nezuko, the sole survivor of the attack, manifests an immunity to sunlight, he focuses his efforts on capturing and devouring her. The Demon Slayer Corps exploits his obsession and set a trap which kills his remaining subordinates. Muzan kills Tamayo and numerous Demon Slayers before realizing that he was drugged with a variation of the humanity-restoring serum, with added poisons that nullifies most of his abilities, weakening him enough so that the Corps can fight him till dawn. Muzan's final act is to turn Tanjiro into a new demon so he would kill the Demon Slayers, but this fails when Tanjiro's friends help to restore his humanity.

Twelve Kizuki

edit

The Twelve Kizuki (十二鬼月, Jūnikizuki) is a special group of demons who serve Muzan and have a special mark of their membership engraved on their eyes. Second only to Muzan, they are the most powerful demons to have lived. After Rui's death, Muzan decides to eliminate the Lower Ranks and have only the Upper Ranks under his command.

Upper Ranks

edit

The Upper Ranks (上弦, Jōgen) are the high-ranking members of the Twelve Kizuki, with some having mutated their bodies to the point that, unlike other demons. they cannot be killed via decapitation. One member of his cult was Inosuke's mother Kotoha, whom he devoured when she attempted to flee upon learning his true nature. He was also responsible for killing Shinobu's older sister Kanae. A petulant demon who shares the position of Upper Rank Six with her older brother Gyutaro. Daki takes advantage of her work as an oiran in the red-light district to attract victims. As a human, she was named Ume (, lit. syphilis), after the disease that killed her mother, and was raised by Gyutaro in the red-light district slums they were born in. Her beauty led to success in the district at a young age despite her volatile personality, until she was burned alive at the age of thirteen by a customer she attacked. She was on the verge of dying alongside Gyutaro when Doma—who was the Upper Rank Six demon at the time—saved them by transforming them into demons, and later introduced them to the Twelve Kizuki. She wields an obi belt made of her flesh, which she also uses to absorb her victims and place them in a secret location before devouring them. After Zenitsu and Inosuke kill her, she returns to her former human appearance and meets Gyutaro in the afterlife, refusing to leave his side despite him trying to push her away so she would not have to go to Hell, reminding him of their promise to survive anything together.
Gyutaro (妓夫太郎, Gyūtarō)
Voiced by: Ryōta Ōsaka[46] (Japanese); Brandon McInnis[47] (English)
A misanthropic demon who shares the position of Upper Rank Six with his younger sister Daki. As a human, he was born in the red-light district slums alongside Daki and was ostracized for his unsightly appearance. Ume gave him joy and allowed him to embrace his vile disposition while making a living as a debt collector, only to be mortally wounded after killing the customer who burned her alive; Doma later turned him into a demon. He usually hides within Daki's body and emerges whenever her life is threatened. He fights using his poisonous blood and two flesh sickles as his Blood Demon Art. As dual holders of Upper Rank Six, Gyutaro must be decapitated together with Daki to be truly killed. After Tengen and Tanjiro kill him, he expresses regret over being a negative influence to Ume when she was alive and decides to go to Hell alone to atone for their sins, but he relents after Ume refuses to leave his side.
Kaigaku (獪岳)
Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya (Japanese); Alejandro Saab[48] (English)
A young demon who attained the position of Upper Rank Six following Daki and Gyutaro's deaths. As a human, he was one of the orphans under Gyomei's care; he was chased out by the other children for stealing the temple's money and encountered a demon, which he let into the temple in exchange for having his life spared, leading to their deaths and Gyomei's wrongful imprisonment. He then became a member of the Demon Slayer Corps, learning the Thunder Breathing from Jigoro along with Zenitsu, before betraying them and allowing Kokushibo to transform him into a demon, leading Jigoro to commit seppuku in atonement. Unlike Zenitsu, who only mastered the first of the six forms of Thunder Breathing, Kaigaku only mastered the other five. He is killed when Zenitsu strikes him with a self-taught, seventh form.

Being a favoured member of the Twelve Kizuki, he gains Muzan's permission to transform other humans and demons with his blood into a replacement family, who he abuses due to his warped view of familial bonds.
