Flag proportions at the Olympics
editAs the Olympics require all flags to be 3:2 (except Nepal), perhaps this should reflect that if images are available.
At least use the correct version of the flag of Switzerland:
SUI = { name = "Switzerland", "Flag of Switzerland.svg", ["Summer Olympics"] = "Civil Ensign of Switzerland (Pantone).svg", ["Winter Olympics"] = "Civil Ensign of Switzerland (Pantone).svg", },
And consider using the 3:2 version for Great Britain
File:Flag of the United Kingdom (3-2).svg
Mjb1981 (talk) 14:59, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- Should start trickling through the system. If you see anything weird post here and I'll see it (no need to ping). Primefac (talk) 16:19, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- Excellent! That all looks good.
- I've been tracking down other 3:2 versions. The following should also be changed for the Summer and Winter Olympics.

- Mjb1981, can you please refactor it to just the country line and the new flag(s)? I don't need all the rest and it's going to be a bit of a slog trying to sort stuff out. Primefac (talk) 23:55, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- Sure, as below. I've added a few more to this list too.

- Also, these former flags of the USA:
Flag of the United States (1959-1960, 3-2 aspect ratio).svg
Flag of the United States (1912-1959, 3-2 aspect ratio).svg
Flag of the United States (1908-1912, 3-2 aspect ratio).svg

- I'm gassed, will try to get to this tomorrow. Primefac (talk) 20:40, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
- Mjb1981, I started working on this, got distracted by something, and ended up at this article which seems to indicate that the actual Swiss flag (i.e. "the square one") is being used during the 2024 Games. I also cannot find a source that says that countries must fly a 3:2 flag. I'm not necessarily doubting you (clearly you've looked into this more than I) but if you have a source that I can use to justify what will be a rather large update, I would appreciate it. Primefac (talk) 13:46, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, no worries.
- The source I have is on page 37 of this [1] which is the guide created for Tokyo 2020. I have seen numerous references to it over the years but that is the one I can find now.
- Mjb1981 (talk) 20:04, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
- Okay, thanks. It does say in the guide that it's been standard at the Olympics, so that's good enough for me for previous years. Primefac (talk) 20:21, 4 August 2024 (UTC)

Well, I did it, then I undid it, because it was causing issues with the historical flags (e.g. Hungary at the 1896 Summer Olympics was showing the modern flag). Going to have to think about the best way to deal with those. Primefac (talk) 21:14, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
- Ah, yes. I see the issue. I assume you don't want to specify every olympics for such countries.
- The countries from my earlier list which I think can be done now, as they haven't been in the Olympics under a different flag:
- New Zealand
- Kazakhstan
- Croatia
- Uzbekistan
- Ireland
- North Korea
- Slovenia
- Sweden
- Tuvalu
- Cuba
- Moldova
- Qatar
- Latvia
- Jordan
- Kuwait
- North Macedonia
- Cook Islands
- Niue
- Grenada
- Mjb1981 (talk) 10:37, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
- I've been looking a little bit more into this, and It seems likely that all events seem to use the Olympic 3:2 flag ratio. Whilst I haven't found anything so concrete at the Olympic flag manual linked to earlier, the pictures of medal ceremonies etc, the Paralympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian/European Games and others seem to show that this is a fairly universal practice at sporting meets.
- Below are links to videos of flags at various games showing 3:2 flags, which I found by a few searches on YouTube:
- Commonwealth Games: flags of Nigeria and Samoa (both usually 2:1)
- Commonwealth Games: flags of New Zealand (usually 2:1)
- Commonwealth Games: flags of Jamaica (usually 2:1)
- Asian Games: flags of Jordan and the Philippines (both usually 2:1)
- CIS Games: flags of Kazakhstan and Belarus (both usually 2:1)
- Paralympic Games: British flag (usually 2:1)
- European Games: Swiss flag (usually 1:1)
- AFC Asian Cup: Kuwaiti flag (usually 2:1)
- I suspect there might be exceptions, especially from smaller events that just grab an image off Wikipedia.
- As is said in the Olympic Manual, this is done to ensure that all flags are of a similar size when displayed next to each other, so it makes sense for other games events to use this rule as well. I think it also makes sense for Wikipedia to do this for the same reason, as well as better representing the flags used at these events.
- So what would you think about changing the default flag to 3:2 where such an image is available, and add exceptions for specific games if they are identified?
- Mjb1981 (talk) 09:05, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
- I think that's a reasonable assessment, but if I'm going to be basically rewriting the entire data module with new values I would rather there be more of a consensus to do so. It's probably worth starting a discussion at WT:SPORTS and cross-posting to other Projects that might find it to be of interest (including WT:OLYMPICS and probably the Village Pump). I am also not 100% sure but I think this module is called by other templates that might not necessarily be using it for sport-related purposes, but again that's why it's probably good to get a wider consensus. - Out of curiosity, was there anything in 2010 where they used the older flag? If not, I can just drop the date from 2010 to 2009 and avoid all these exceptions. Primefac (talk) 13:08, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- That flag change happened in October (which is late) but as far as I know they only participated at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics before the flag change. They used the new flag for the Asian Games, Asian Para Games and Asian Beach Games. so I think it's better to change it to 2009 and make the Youth Olympics as exception.
