2 Glitches

• When I tried to use this template, the subpages began at number 2, instead of the expected 1.
• The number "1" appeared between each subpage.

Alternate format suggestion

Having used this template a bit in conjunction with the random one on a portal, I find that the 'something' page created ultimately becomes a mess, because of the == subheader and no line returns. So I suggest you change it so it would result in something like:

Please click here to nominate a new something.

Usage

1. The layout design for these subpages is at Template talk:Numbered subpages/Layout.
2. Add a new selected something to the next available subpage.
3. Update "max=" to new total for its {{Random portal component}} on the main page.

Here you get something/1 transclusion and it IS readable and the TOC above IS too...
