Mórahalom is a town in Csongrád-Csanád county, in the Southern Great Plain region of southern Hungary. It is a developing town located 20 km (12 mi) far from Szeged, 12 km (7 mi) from the western exit of the M5 motorway, along the main road 55. It is close to the Serbian border.

Etymology
editThe name of the town originates from the sand dune of “Móra Halma”, which was first mentioned in 1729. The exact area of Móra is unknown, however, it is known that its eponym was the family Móra who come from Szeged-Lower Town.[citation needed]
History
editMórahalom gained town rank in 1989.[citation needed] Growth of the settlement was due the prosperity of local farmers who had utilized the “golden eyed” sand of the area.[citation needed]
The whole administrative area of the town is 8,311 ha, its outside urban area is 7.857 ha, its urban area is 454 ha with a population of 6,035. 1,587 of these inhabitants live in outside urban areas (farms).[citation needed]
A 100.75 ha, agriculture-oriented industrial park was established near the town in 1997, housing 89 enterprises and employing 550 people as of 2015,[1] and 106 businesses and 696 employed people as of 2019.[2]
The first qualified producing and selling union was organised here.[when?] Recently, industrial workplaces are being created through small- and medium enterprise development programmes, the service sector is developing at a small regional level, and based on medical tourism a spa town has been established on the Sand Ridge region.[citation needed]

Sport
editSpeedway Maraton Salakmotor (B.S.K.) run motorcycle speedway events at the speedway track, 7 kilometres south of the city.[4] The venue is located at (46°10′14″N 19°54′49″E / 46.17056°N 19.91361°E), adjacent to the motocross track which was run by the speedway rider Róbert Nagy for several years and hosted an international meeting between Hungary and Poland in 2013.[5]
