Percussive maintenance is a colloquial term used to describe the act of repetitive physical interactions with an electrical device with the aim of alleviating its malfunction. The applied force can consist of hitting, tapping or kicking, and the physical act can re-establish a connection across a poor solder joint. Percussive maintenance is less likely to work with modern instruments.
During the Apollo 12 mission when a camera malfunctioned, NASA's astronauts resorted to hitting it with a hammer.[1]
