Events

1869 – The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad opens its first segment of track (6 miles / 10 km long) between Topeka and Pauline, Kansas.
1875 – Prince Edward Island Railway operates its first regularly scheduled train between Charlottetown and Georgetown.^[1]
1884 – The British-owned Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway opens Bahía Blanca Sud railway station in Argentina.
1900 – A defective chimney on a house in Hull starts the Great Hull-Ottawa fire; among the items destroyed are nearly 200 freight cars and the Canadian Pacific Railway station and freight house. The resulting shortage of lumber for reconstruction forces Canada Atlantic Railway to temporarily halt production on new railroad cars at the company shops in Ottawa.^[2]

1905 – The San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad (which later became part of Union Pacific Railroad) signs an agreement to operate over the California Southern Railroad's track through Cajon Pass via trackage rights.^[3]

2003 – DLW completes construction of the first WDP-4 locomotive to be built entirely within India.^[4]

1861 - Jeme Tien Yow, Chief Engineer responsible for construction of the Imperial Peking-Kalgan Railway, the first railway constructed in China without foreign assistance (d. 1919).
