Select WA 99 for February. Dough4872 19:40, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
- Washington State Route 99 — Given that the new tunnel is expected to open this month, I think it's appropriate. SounderBruce 23:59, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- We just had WA 522 back in November 2018, so maybe wanna push this to later in the year. Dough4872 01:09, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
- Given that this is likely to be the biggest highway story of the year for the West Coast, I think we should make an exception. SounderBruce 01:28, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
- Regional balance was a bigger deal when this page had clusters of active editors (for lack of better words the Michigan faction, New York faction, West coast faction, Utah faction, etc.) and those states dominated coverage of the portal just due to the fact they were the areas most represented by active editors. I think regional balance is important, but not the number 1 factor anymore, as the makeup of the active editor pool has changed. However, my concern is will the article be of good quality and stable on that day? For example, back in Sept 2012 a then new phase of Interstate 580 opened to traffic. I-580 suddenly went from being a short unsigned highway designation, unknown outside of the roadgeek community, to suddenly publically signed and being discussed in the media and one of the major arteries in Nevada. Even with 2 active editors monitoring the situation we struggled to keep the article from being a crap magnet for a few days. Once things settled down LJthefro and myself got the article back into good shape, but it took a few days. I would fully support having WA-99 be on the portal in the "in the news" section, but would prefer it become the featured article on the portal after things have stabilized. I'd support it being the featured article IFF you (SounderBruce) are willing to sign up for crap cleanup on that week.Dave (talk) 16:16, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
- Agree that WA 99 should be added to the portal news when the new tunnel opens and that the selected article be held to a later month when things are more stable. Dough4872 01:47, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
- @SounderBruce: just be bold and create the page for next month. I thought we were going to pre-load the portal so we didn't have to do this every month anyway. –Fredddie™ 01:57, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

- I can commit to watching the article closely, except for the days when major events happen (e.g. the viaduct/tunnel walk, which I will be taking in for the whole day). I don't see why we can't have an article specifically expanded and improved for this month be on the portal page, especially when considering the last WA instance (WA 522) wasn't nominated at all.
