I started with the portal from the red link in Wikipedia:WikiProject Argentina but i think it was the wrong place . In stead of "Wikipedia:wikiportal/Arg" it should have been "Portal:Arg". Maybe we can move it later. Argentino 18:58, 31 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Getting this portal organised

edit

While my responsibilities require much of my time, I would enjoy putting a couple hours or so a week into overseeing this Wikipedia.org Portal. I have been interested in Argentina for the last ten years, know some info about the country, and have about eight years experience building web sites. I will check back in a day or so. January 2, 2007 -[[]]

I see that this portal has languished since a promising beginning in October/November 2005. Can I lend a hand to get it up and running properly? I'm not in Argentina, although I have visited it (and think it's a beautiful country), but I have some experience of running portals from the New Zealand and Oceania portals. I'm not volunteering to take on the primary responsibility for this portal, but I could get a monthly rotation of selected articles and pictures set up, and kick off the "In the News" section. For me, that would be a great way to become better aquainted with Argentine politics and culture before I next visit.

On the other hand, if no one is interested in the portal at all, perhaps it should be put up for deletion.-gadfium 04:11, 17 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ok, i started the portal from a red link and told that to everyone in the talk page of WP:AR, now i have placed a kind of userbox-invitation in the talk pages of some argentine editors that i think are the best. Argentino 15:18, 17 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

PS: let's wait a week, and if nobody is interested, we delete it

I think we are more likely to attract attention if we start making active changes. Sometimes it takes months of keeping a portal lively before new people get drawn into it. Once the portal is set up, it will only require a few minutes a week to keep going - primarily just updating "In the News" a couple of times a week. I'm suggesting a monthly rotation of selected articles and pictures so we can set up a queue of 12 items and not have to worry about it again for a year.
I hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes here.
I've done a bit of tidy up of the portal page. I think the next step is to get a list of selected articles and pictures. For the New Zealand portal, we have a rotation between four types of selected articles: a city, a biography, and then two other articles. Since each selection lists the last three items, the viewer always sees a diversity in the last few selected articles. Here's a possible list of selected articles: (now moved to it's own section of this page)
Please feel free to change these, to reorder them, or to comment on the suitability of the selections. I chose the first two biographies as people who are very well known outside Argentina as well as to Argentines, and then deliberately chose someone who is less well known as the third. (Diego Maradona would have been my choice if I'd wanted a third very famous person, but then I wouldn't have chosen Football in Argentina as an article).
For selected pictures, I am not in a good position to choose, since I haven't read many of the Argentine-related articles on wikipedia, but here's a few anyway. Each picture needs to have an article to back it up, but the article doesn't need to be very detailed: (now moved to its own section of this page)
I was disappointed not to find a picture of a condor from Argentina. I suspect I haven't captured the full diversity of Argentina in these pictures. I also was trying to get a dozen pictures, but I overshot. Again, please add, change or rearrange this list.-gadfium 21:19, 17 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thak you a lot! This is really a good point to start. I have a picture of a condor in one of the other pcs, but i have to search it and have a lot to do (in real life) so maybe tomorrow. Thank you again.Argentino 21:33, 17 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have set up a queue for the selected article, with the current writeup as April 2006, and Buenos Aires as May 2006. The portal will automatically change to the May article when the month changes. If this is acceptable, I will do the same thing for the selected picture. You can see the queue at Portal:Argentina/Selected article/2006.

The portal Introduction should have a general description of Argentina, not of the portal. In fact, it should look rather like the current selected article writeup! We can leave this until later.-gadfium 23:02, 18 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm really convinced that you are the best help. I didn't even know this existed. I am going to add some more articles to the queue later on, i feel we have to concentrate in the portal itself. thankyou again. Argentino 23:14, 18 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've uploaded this image of a condor:  Argentino 21:05, 19 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've now put the selected picture into a queue; see Portal:Argentina/Selected picture/2006. In the next couple of days I'll build both queues up a bit.-gadfium 22:01, 19 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm going to add Image:Erythrina crista-galli2.jpg it is our national flower Argentino 22:09, 19 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Very nice! Should we have a standard that the picture is on the left, or the picture is centred with the text below it, or does it not matter?
I've created a shortcut P:AR for the portal.-gadfium 23:36, 19 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Now that it's a new month (UTC time), the portal is displaying the new selected article and picture. I'm now back at university, so my time on Wikipedia is limited. I will make sure the selection queues don't run out, but I might not do much more work here until mid July.-gadfium 02:35, 1 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, G! Hope to see you soon with more of your valuable work. Mariano(t/c) 11:19, 2 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Categories and topics

edit

At the moment, these both link to major articles about Argentina. I suggest that we incorporate the links from the current categories pane into the topics pane, and remove the redlinks from topics. The categories pane is supposed to link to the major categories, but I am not sure if it is needed, since we have ten important categories already linked at the very top of the portal. If we don't keep the categories pane, the topics pane can be moved to the right hand column for balance.-gadfium 06:48, 20 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Selected articles

edit

These are proposed selected articles only. Any one can add to the list, comment on the list, or rearrange it. There is a particular design at present; a city appears as every fourth entry, and a biography follows the city. Since each selected article writeup links to the previous three selections, this helps keep the selection diverse.

Selected pictures

edit

As with selected articles, this is only a draft. Feel free to add to the list, comment on it, or rearrange it. Try to keep a diversity of subject matter; don't put two pictures of similar items next to each other, or two pictures by the same photographer together.

In the news

edit

Could someone add the story about the situation in San Salvador de Jujuy where 150,000 people have been without running water for a week. I can't find an English language news story about it, and my Spanish isn't good enough to translate from a Spanish source. Thanks.-gadfium 08:39, 27 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Could you be more specific? When did this take place? Mariano(t/c) 08:33, 28 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
The story I saw yesterday was about schools being closed. The story I see today is about orders for a new pipeline to be built. Apparently the old one keeps bursting, so maybe this is a regular story. The link I have today is (BA Herald), but I'm not sure the link will last more than a few hours.-gadfium 09:14, 28 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
See if this link works: [1] This one says 200,000 people are affected. This should go on the current events page.-gadfium 09:22, 28 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Done at 2006 in Argentina#April. It doesn't sound that bad though.
Hey, that BA Herald is really something: "A 14-year-old boy was taken to hospital for treatment after he was knocked unconscious by a punch from a fellow-student at a school in the city of La Plata, the Buenos Aires provincial capital, police said yesterday." Very interesting news... Mariano(t/c) 11:49, 28 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Aniversaries

edit

It is the best translation i can find for "efemérides" so please when you find the correct word change the header. I try to have every day's aniversaries (On this day, in the year X happened this). The work is not that hard because someone in :es has already gathered the info for us, but we still have to translate. If you think it is a bad idea, just delete it.--Argentino (talk/cont.) 01:26, 7 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

It's a good idea, but rather a lot of work for you. I suggest you try to keep at least a week ahead of the current date.
I changed the spelling to "anniversaries" with two "n"s. Please create further articles with this spelling.-gadfium 00:00, 8 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
hahaha, I thought it was with 2 "n", don't worrie, I'll try to keep it every day--Argentino (talk/cont.) 21:28, 8 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
I don't understand. Why have you changed the spelling back? See Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries for an example of the correct spelling, or see wikt:anniversary.-gadfium 23:29, 8 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm a bit idot today. I thought i had to change it and i had written with 2 "n" wrongly, now i understand. excuse me.--Argentino (talk/cont.) 00:48, 9 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sadly the guys at es:Portal:Argentina aren'`t mantaining anymore the anniversaries, and i can't look for them in internet because i haven't got much time, so i'll be translating everything they have done so far and maybe we add them the following year —Argentino (talk/cont.) 12:57, 25 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
I commented out the section on the portal page as I saw you weren't keeping up the translations. If you/they restart, you can just comment the section back in.-gadfium 19:23, 25 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Portal Sections and other things...

edit

G'day everyone! How is everyone doin? - I have a few questions about the current sections of the portal. Shouldn't the Categories section have links to actual Category pages? For example, one of the links there is Tourism in Argentina, which actually directs us to that page, instead of having Category:Tourism in Argentina. Right now it looks like a list of selected articles. / Also, we could add some articles that are needed in the Things you can do category, this could be helpful for newcomers joining WP:ARG, who don't know what to start on. One of things listed there now, is adding to the Argentine related articles, isn't this similar to Category:Argentina. We could maybe pick an article and work on it for a month, let people know that that certain article needs more info, then selecting another article the following month. Another suggestion would be adding a Related Wikimedia section.

Now changing the subject, if I want to add something in the Argentina News... how do I know what is actually appropriate to add? We obviously can't add all possible news that hapend in a day, it would be tooooooo long... Oh and, is there a maximum amount of news? when do they start getting deleted?

(By the way, I changed the Map image of Argentina that was placed on the portal intro with it's global location map, and arranged it correctly with the others... they were dispersed around the box, I hope it's alright)

It would be nice making it a featured portal ;-) See ya around CROWDUDE 03:48, 22 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hola Crowdude, thanks for your interest in the Argentine portal. Unfortunately, we don't have anyone willing to put much effort into this portal at the moment. I set up queues for the selected article and selected picture a few months ago, and have been keeping those queues stocked, and I've updated the news pane occasionally (mostly by taking material from 2006 in Argentina). There are a number of other sections of the portal I've just ignored, including the categories section.
It would be great if you changed the categories section to be a list of the major categories dealing with Argentina, similar to the Categories section of Portal:New Zealand. Also, the Topics section should be overhauled to remove the redlinks and add other topics which we do have articles for. For the news section, I'd suggest you try to add at least one news story a week, but no more than one a day on average. Usually, we remove the oldest story when adding a new one. Ideally, the left and right sides of the portal should be about the same length, but so far I haven't worried about this too much. If you revamp the categories and/or topics sections, then their relative lengths will probably change. You could also swap these two sections over, to give more room on the right side for news stories.
I suggest you wait a little while for more comments here before doing anything too drastic. Since both you and I are in New Zealand, it would be nice to get some feedback from people in Argentina about future directions for this portal.-gadfium 04:53, 22 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hi Gadfium!… I changed the layout of the portal, it looks better now. I haven’t changed any of the discussed before, still waiting to see if someone passes through here and gives his/her opinion. I might try later on, to get the word out about what we are doing in the Argentina Project’s discussion page, some people may not even be aware of the portal or have think of it as a lost case.
I’m convinced that once the portal is up and running, more users will want to volunteer, especially from Argentina; I see that most of the work that has been made in the portal came from your contributions which are great, one of the most important things to have now, is Argentine users contributing, although I check online newspapers, I might not always know on what goes on over there.
As said, I won’t change the contents of the boxes yet; I’m seeing what categories could go there, and the current format that it has now occupies too much space. I’m also trying to see what articles could go in the Topics section, the red links should be removed temporarily until they get filled, and adding them into the To-do list. Just in case, I saved a copy of the old portal layout.
Cheers. CROWDUDE 23:55, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Timeline of Argentine history

In an effort to reduce the redlinks of principal pages listed here, I have created Timeline of Argentine history, which needs editing and adding to - particularly on pre-1500 events and on non-political/military events. Mtiedemann 12:55, 24 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I don't mean to be nosy; but I changed the picture of the selected article since it was one of the Strait of Magellan and the article was Córdoba.--cloviz 12:17, 16 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! I produce each selected article by copying the previous one, and must have neglected to update the picture. You are always welcome to fix mistakes here.-gadfium 19:07, 16 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Area of Argentina

edit

I've changed this in the Portal Intro to use the continental area, excluding Argentina's claim to Antarctica. This is the main figure presented in the Argentina article, and seems to me to be the more accurate figure to indicate the size of the country.-gadfium 19:00, 29 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

New maintainer needed

edit

I stepped in to help out with Portal:Argentina in April, but I was never planning to become the principal maintainer. I would like someone else to volunteer to take over running the portal.-gadfium 02:54, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

No one has come forward to take over maintenance, so I'll advertise more widely. On 1 January 2007 the selected article and picture queues will be exhausted, and the unmaintained state of the portal will be more obvious.-gadfium 02:13, 30 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Please tell me more about being a maintainer on my talk page --Sharz 00:04, 1 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Actually, this portal could be set on auto-run by using the "random portal component" template as used by Portal:Education, or a custom-built auto-updating code like that on Portal:Kerala. Good time that can be spent improving articles shouldn't be wasted on a portal.--thunderboltz(Deepu) 14:30, 1 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
That needs to be set up. The existing list of selected pictures and selected articles are not necessarily suitable, as they are only a selection of the many articles/pictures available. However, reusing existing content could be preferable to deleting the portal if no one is willing to maintain it.-gadfium 18:37, 1 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
A simpler last resort would be just to freeze the portal to show the December 2006 selected article and picture.-gadfium 02:45, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I've already cited interest in maintaining this portal, and I will do so temporarily, and I hope that those many many members from Wikiproject Argentina will help in this process, by maybe nominating good articles and pictures, I will commence are the begining of March so that all can be prepared for the new auto-mation of some functions. --Sharz 04:15, 4 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Maintainer Found

edit

I did not mention it before here but I took it upon myself to maintain it as it was neglected. I have been doing it since February 2008. I have added new articles and pictures to be running automagically until the end of 2008. Also added archive pages (and links) for both past articles and pictures. I also added greatly to the DYK section and regularly contribute to the News section. Volunteer helpers and more specifically nominations for future articles and pictures are always welcome. -- Alexf42 22:15, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

New feature added

edit

I have added a new feature: "Anniversaries". It works automatically, by adding supporting files for every day of the year. It needs a lot of work to add noteworthy events. If you could help by adding more it will be appreciated. If you prefer not to edit but have links to articles in the English Wikipedia only, write me at my Talk page or post a message here. No redlinks in "Anniversary" pages please. Notable events only. -- Alexf(talk) 22:57, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

News

edit

I have added to the "News" section a small image at the top, in the way of the one located at the "In the news" section of Wikipedia's main page. The rules would be: related to the most recent news described (if possible), small size, no photo caption (just the photo), a mention in the text when what is being talked about is the content of the photo (which would serve as a "caption" of sorts, like in the Main Page). Of course, we won't always have a free image of the news themselves, but we can use the same system of the main page: if the news is "Kirchner did X and Y", we provide a generic photo of him, like File:Nestor-Kirchner.jpg, and write "Kirchner (pictured) did X and Y". This will help to make the Portal more appealing, instead of pure text MBelgrano (talk) 22:39, 2 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Good idea. I agree, as long as the image is legal within Wikipedia's rules (image must be in WP or in Commons) and obviously related to the news. When the news item moves down and there is a new image, then the previous image should be removed. The idea would be to have only one image in the whole section. Also note that whenever I add a new story I remove one from the bottom to try to more or less keep the sections balanced vertically. Just removed the bottom one today to account for the new on on top (new items always go on top). -- Alexf(talk) 23:16, 2 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Of course, non-free images are completely forbidden outside of article namespace. And I forget another detail: when the image of a news text is replaced with a new one, the "(pictured)" in the text would have to be removed. MBelgrano (talk) 23:58, 2 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Articles and photos

edit

I propose a change in the system for displaying selected articles and photos. Right now, they display a page that is specifically created each month, and each month there is a new one. It can be replaced with a system that automatically selects an item from a predefined list. The job would be then to create and mantain such lists.

This will drive away the potencial problem of the Portal having an ugly red link if, for whatever reason, all users leave or forgot it and nobody comes to create the needed new entry in time. Maintenance would still be needed, but not in such an important degree. I can also help to improve the quality of the articles displayed (a requirement for featured portal status, which should be an aim): urged to find yet another article for the new month we may list whatever article as long as it isn't in a critical condition, even if it's just of start level, like the one currently in place. We should control that all articles selected are at least of "B" quality in the wikiproject quality scale.

This won't mean either to create a system that would leave the Portal unmantained: after the new system is installed, the day-to-day maintenance would be to nominate and add (or remove) new articles to the list. MBelgrano (talk) 17:02, 3 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thought of that long ago but the system then repeats pages/images from a pool. This way it is always a new article/image and the old ones are always archived and viewable, and can be checked to avoid repeats whenever possible (happened once). I have no problems with the current system. You may have noticed that many months in advance are always preloaded, so it is easy to do several at a time, and there's never any urgency. Should an article be deemed more timely at some point, the pre-created articles can be moved around, or pushed for later months, as they have not been seen yet anyway. I have no problem maintaining this system, as I have for years. The only issue is identifying worthwhile images/articles for the future. Recommendations for new candidates are always welcome. -- Alexf(talk) 17:42, 3 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I quit

edit

I have been the sole maintainer of the site since February 2008. Even though help was requested, it was never forthcoming. Nonetheless, I have maintained the site daily for over three years. This week, out of the blue, an editor came in and unilaterally decided to completely re-design the site, No consultation, nada. The work, in good faith, is extensive and I must say I do not like it for several reasons. Most of my work (hundreds of entries for daily events, constant updating of recent news, pre-set non-repeating article and photo of the month) are all there but now lost in limbo, as they have been taken out. I asked the editor in question several days ago, and received nary a response. I do not have the energy, or the time, to undo such a massive re-work and restore to the previous format, pending a discussion, which should have been done in the first place. I do not want to start an edit war. There are a couple of editors that have been very active in the project (but not in the portal) and I want to thank them for their good work there (you know who they are and I have given them barnstars when I thought appropriate). Unfortunately nobody really helped with the Portal and now it's beyond repair. Therefore I now officially quit the this portal. I wish you luck. I'll dedicate my energies to other sections of Wikipedia. -- Alexf(talk) 04:52, 27 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for the delay, I have too many pages in the watchlist and had not noticed the changes until today. Although I'm not opposed to changes in themselves, I agree with Alexf in this. Someone starting a Portal may have the freedom to be bold and rearrange things as needed until getting a working system, but if the portal is already established the changes should be proposed and discussed first. Either to work with the others, or to confirm if a Portal was abandoned (which is not the case here).
First, I'm not sure whenever having "biography" or "location" articles may be a good idea. It makes sense in a portal about a specific war, as the vast majority of articles within scope will be about either people or events, but a country is more broad than this and there are lots of article "topics" that we may group. That's why most country portals have just "featured articles" or "selected articles" sections. More so with having different "selected picture" and "selected panorama" sections. As for the other sections, sections with red links are really ugly, and should only be included in Portals that are being built for the first time. It would be better to prepare the subsection at the portal namespace first, and then include it in the main Portal page, when it's working and won't disrupt the normal appearence of the Portal.
On the other hand, I think that the use of random elements from a predefined list is a better option in cases like this, when both the Portal and the topic itself (articles related to Argentina) have a small number of users working on them. It may be repetitive, but it helps to make sure that all the articles are in good state, and gives less work in the long run. If there was a legion of Argentine users improving articles to the point that we may name a different B-Class article each month, the nomination and selection system would work. But as things are, the better system would be to create a system of rotating high-quality articles, add new ones to the rotation when they are good enough, and when we reach a reasonable top level we may continue adding new ones replacing the oldest ones. Of course, "In the news" will be an exception, for obvious reasons, and the "Selected picture" may remain in a system of a new one each month, as in that case we do have a really high number of good pictures and users (from other projects, but that's not an obstacle here) taking photos and uploading them to Commons.
In short: the Portal should not have been modified in such an extensive way without discussing or announcing it first; but to simply revert everything to the "before" would be equally aggresive. I suggest those changes to the current portal: remove the selected biographies and locations and incorporate them into a single selected article system, remove "selected picture" and rename "selected panorama" as picture (the section should take 2 columns, as it would include panoramas and other wide pictures), move the orphaned Portal:Argentina/Argentina news to the section that should include it, fill the Anniversaries to at least one for each day of a month from now, transclude Wikipedia:WikiProject Argentina/Recognized content into the featured content or prepare a shorter version (we may limit to actual featured and good articles, dismissing former ones, DYK and "In the News"), remove the "Lists" section for the moment and restore it when we have it filled and working, and restore Wikipedia:WikiProject Argentina/Tab header to the top of the page Cambalachero (talk) 17:23, 28 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
