Nice start. Might I suggest incorporating some non-Western poetic topics? Some good articles to look at include Du Fu, the Shahnama, and some of the pages relating to the Vedas and Vedic meter. A corner focused on linguistic topics (e.g., tonal languages) would also be nice. Sam 18:00, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Poetry Portal changes

Colours

I'm not sure if the white text on a pale blue background for the box headers 'works' ... not quite enough contrast on my laptop's LCD at any rate. Any suggestions? I can play around with this a bit if you like. Stumps 13:01, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

The color we choose needs to go with the blue links and the bluish/violet templates. I'd avoid blue and use either a pure complementary color(perhaps a deep ochre). Sam 13:32, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
Do you think we can do anything about the colors? Adambiswanger1 13:58, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
I've made the blue a little deeper which solves the problem on my LCD screen ... but I'm certainly not attached to any particular colour scheme. Perhaps someone with more of a sense for this stuff can have a think about it. Stumps 14:07, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

News Section

Possibly we could add a 'news' section ... in some portals they tend to get out of date, but it's also a great incentive to add 'current' material. Suggestions:

Any thoughts?Stumps 13:08, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

I'd add Claudia Emerson for the Pulitzer. It might be worth a box to focus just on contemporary poets and recent prizewinners. Sam 13:31, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
Ok ... I've done it, and added a News / Events section into the portal. let's try to keep it up to date ... (it's probably also an incentive to start adding poetry news into WikiNews! ... as if we didn'rt already have enough to do :) ...) Stumps 13:40, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
Ok cool. I have no problem with a news section, because, as you said, it adds more "modern" poetry to the page. Even if the news becomes a month or two old, that's ok because no one expects poetry to be a hotbed of change. Adambiswanger1 13:58, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Some changes

I added a "language corner box, for articles focusing on how language is used, and shifted the categories box to the left and added the "lists of poets" boxes. I also started cyclying through quotes and did you knows, subtracting one from the top and adding one to the bottom in each case. Feel free to change, replace, whatever. I also changed the color on the templates to match the blue on these headings - the contrast was bugging me. Sam 11:54, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Nice changes. Well done. I'd been planning to update the colours on the templates for consistency, it had been bugging me too. Stumps 16:03, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
Well done. We have ourselves a portal Adambiswanger1 18:44, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
Well done! You created a wonderful portal. If you would use a currentyear-currentweek system, maybe it could be a featured portal candidate too... NCurse work 19:58, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Changes

I kicked in a new image to surpise everyone. Do we want to get changes on a regular schedule, or are surprises more fun? Sam 00:30, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

Nice image! I've been thinking of switching to the ARCHIVE/CURRENTMONTH approach, at least for the selected article ... that way we can work ahead, and get things ready for the first of each month ... however this requires 1) enough on going involvement to make sure we do have something ready for each 1st of the month, and 2) some sort of 'candidate' discussion for selected articles etc. Anyone else have thoughts on this fairly broad topic? Stumps 07:26, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
I think fair use copyrighted images are not encouraged to be used on Portal name space (forbidden on main page), only to be used on respective articles. feydey 13:29, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
Sounds like we need a new image - thanks for the heads up. On rotating, my suggestion would be that we set up a system where anyone with a desire to add something to the list can do so, and it will appear in turn unless there is an objection. See how many we get and maybe we do monthly, maybe weekly, depending on interest. We could set up a sub-page of this page for it, or just put it on this page. Sam 15:32, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
Hint: Portal:Literature has those set-up, go and copy... feydey 21:25, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
Very nice - hung right off the portal template pages themselves. That's great. Sam 21:36, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
Sounds fine by me. I assume this is the location of such a list? AdamBiswanger1 05:23, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm just surfing around until my next taxi mom duty and I stumbled onto here thinking I'd share my fav poetic terms link-

http://www.poeticbyway.com/glossary.html

Thanks kayte

Interesting...In the coming weeks if I see any that aren't included in Wikipedia I'll add them. Maybe I'll add a few to the WikiProject. AdamBiswanger1 03:27, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

CHANGES

I'm going to update the portal, including the featured articles, pictures, poems, etc. on THURSDAY. I could not find any other discussion or medium for discussion on this matter, so please let me know if anyone else already decided on this. AdamBiswanger1 03:41, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

If we haven't done it already, let's switch to the archive/current-month approach (I think Literature portal does it this way) then we can have a clear history of what has already been featured etc. If I get the chance I will try to have a look at this today. Stumps 06:37, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
I've switched the selected article, so that will have to go in Portal:Poetry/Selected article archive/July 2006. Stumps 12:55, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
and I've done the change for Portal:Poetry/Selected image archive/July 2006 Stumps 13:00, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
other sections converted as well Stumps 13:10, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

The full to-do list is:

I guess as we mature we might want to introduce a 'candidate' system so we can collaborate on licking things into shape. Stumps 13:17, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps You could add an "Archive" link to the main page Selected article, SP and others - so people can see the archives and add entries. (see Portal:Literature) feydey 13:49, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
Also why is the "News/Events" section in a monthly rotation? Couldn't the "Quotes" or "poem archive" or "DYK" section change weekly, so there would be more changes? feydey 13:53, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
Good points ... I'm not strongly attached to the monthly approach ... a weekly cycle would increase the workload I suppose, but I'm happy if we want to go that way. I'll put the links in to the archive as you suggest (unless someone beats me to it) Stumps 14:06, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
Given all the work going on Shakespeare's Sonnets, I'd like to see a sonnet as a poem on the page soon. In a lighter hearted vein, I'd also like to see some Dr. Seuss up there before too long - perhaps the close of Yurtle the Turtle or the Magician's Chant from Bart & the Oobleck. Sam 14:21, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
I'd suggest a weekly schedule for a couple of high visibility boxes (image, article) and a monthly for the rest. The other way is to do a weekly for some of the easy stuff (surely we could set up a weekly schedule of poems pretty fast - just run through each poet linked one the poetry article and choose one) and monthly for the items that we'd like to discuss more. Sam 14:48, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
I think weekly for poems and 'did you know' and maybe even 'quotes' should be pretty easy. I think images is a bit of a tricky one as I think we may not have that many good ones, especially if we exclude the fair-use book covers as discussed above. For now I'd suggest leaving this one monthly until we get a good list of candidates on Portal talk:Poetry/Selected image archive and see if we feel confident we have enough. The selected article (and likewise biography) is a tricky one ... I see it as a sort of 'mini-FA' where we nominate some candidates and use that as an incentive to try to get them as close as we can to 'Featured Article' quality ... do you think we can manage to do this weekly and do a good job at it? The events section probably has to be monthly as we get so few new events really worth noting. In summary, I could see changing the setup to be as follows:
  • Selected Article: monthly
  • Events: monthly
  • Image: monthly
  • Biography: monthly
  • Quotes: weekly
  • Poem: weekly
  • Did You Know: weekly
  • Language Corner: monthly
I'm happy to go ahead and make whatever changes we can agree to. For now I'll leave everything monthly, but let's try to come to a consensus quickly as it will be easier to switch before we have a history of monthly pages in place. Stumps 15:34, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
One other point to bear in mind: with summer just starting for some of us, we need to make sure that when our hard workers take a holiday that there are others who can step in to make sure the articles are ready for each automatic switch over ... this of course will be less likely to be a problem if we are on a monthly cycle. If a sub-page isn't ready then the portal will just look broken. Stumps 15:39, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
I second your approach and selections on monthly/weekly. We can revisit after we get a queue, and if any of the queues are long enough, or too short, adjust accordingly. I think I'm going to add Nabokov's Notes on Prosody to the Language Corner for next month (a nice piece that discussed differences between Russian and English verse), and I'd suggest we put Alliterative verse in the queue at some point for our Selected Article. I'll come up with a list of a half-dozen out of copyright poems for the Poem page as well. Sam 17:31, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
Sounds fine by me. For the first couple months, perhaps we should just have featured articles or good articles. As for now, I'll put in a sonnet as suggested, and Caedmon as the selected article. Any thoughts? AdamBiswanger1 19:44, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
I agree with Stumps setup, it is reasonable. The only thing that I would change, is to take Events/News out of any rotation and just do it manually. feydey 19:59, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
Caedmon is great, but why not save it for a biography; otherwise we'll have two bios up at the same time. Caedmon and Alliterative verse (also an FA) shouldn't be up at the same time, since they're related. There are three national poetry articles that are FA: Irish poetry, English poetry and Poetry of the United States, and with ee cummings on the Bio, I'd go with Irish poetry as giving the most variety. Other thoughts? Should we just stick with Caedmon? Sam 21:33, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
I was going for the same thing as you by nominating Caedmon (something outside of traditional poetry)--But you're right 2 biographies might be a little much. Irish poetry would be fine--in fact I'll Be Bold and change it. AdamBiswanger1 18:45, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

August

So I trust this is how we set up August, for the monthlies:

I'm putting Caedmon in for Biography. Stumps, do you know how to set up weekly? Sam 16:52, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

re weekly: see next ... Stumps 10:02, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
Yes, that's how we set up August, but it will be easier now to do it from the main archive pages:

Now we can easily work ahead of time. Stumps 10:39, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Weekly

Did we agree on weekly for just: Quotes, Poem, and Did You Know? I can have a go at setting this up. Stumps 10:03, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

I've made these changes, and will add archive links to the portal boxes soon. Stumps 10:11, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
Archive pages all in place, which will make it easier for us to 'work ahead'. Stumps 10:36, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Future candidates

I suggest we use the talk page for each of the archives to discuss candidates. For example, I've put a suggestion on Portal talk:Poetry/Selected biography archive. Stumps 10:28, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Relieving Crowding

I shifted some things around to relieve overcrowding, and made the boxes split 55/44 instead of 60/39. I put the categories on the bottom. If anyone doesn't like it, let me know, and I'll return it or make other changes. Thanks, Sam 18:59, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Associated WikiMedia

Almost all of those "Associated WikiMedia" icons on the bottom go nowhere (no Poetry on WikiNews etc.). Can we just delete them or is it standard form to have them? Sam 20:58, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Updating

Our quote for the first couple days of the week was a redlink; I put in a quote for this week and put the same one in for the next several weeks, just so it won't go red again. If anyone has a chance to come up with some, we could use them.

Stumps, nice poem this week. Sam 00:20, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

I'll work on it. Another question: Do you think it's appropriate to have snippits of poems in the quote section? perhaps something like "Arise my St. John! And leave all meaner things/ to low ambition and the pride of kings", then having a link saying something like "From Essay on Man by Alexander Pope. Or should we just have quotes relating to poetry. I think this greatly constrains us, though. AdamBiswanger1 23:45, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks - I see no reason not to be as free form as possible in the quotes. A bit of humor, an odd thought, a little profundity - all should be welcome. Sam 00:44, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

G. Onimira Farley

Could someone look at G. Onimira Farley and either expand on this person's notability or {{prod}} the article? Thanks. -Harmil 02:02, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I AfD'd him, and it can be found here. Thanks for bringing it to our attention AdamBiswanger1 15:44, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
