Scottish studies is an interdisciplinary field of research devoted to the study of Scotland, History of Scotland, Geography of Scotland, Scottish society, Culture of Scotland, Politics of Scotland, Economy of Scotland, Languages of Scotland, Scottish literature, Gaelic literature and of Scottish people in Scotland and elsewhere. It is sometimes subsumed within the category of Celtic studies and European studies.[1]
Centres
editThere are a number of academic centres of Scottish Studies which offer a range of awards. These include:
- Scotland
- University of Aberdeen: Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies
- University of Edinburgh: Celtic and Scottish Studies; School of Scottish Studies
- University of Glasgow: Centre for Scottish and Celtic Studies. A Chair of Celtic Studies was established there in 1956 followed by a Chair of Gaelic Studies in 2010.
- University of the Highlands and Islands:
It is also possible to obtain a Scottish Studies Award at secondary schools.[2]
