Aston Villa "double"
editAs Villa won the title by 11 points (see league table) how can they have confirmed their status as League Champions on the day of the Cup Final? --Daemonic Kangaroo 13:05, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
- Hiya DC, I've just spent some time looking into this for you and I say you're right about this. The FA website states that the final was played on the 10th of April 1897 ( see for yourself [1] ), while the list of matches with dates I've uncovered [2] categorically states there was no Villa match on that day. Assuming what I've found is accurate ( I know as much about football as the average hamster ), you're right and that piece of rubbish should get snipped. --Nanobot recurve (talk) 17:31, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
- Villa played (and won) three games that season after the cup final, thus gaining 6 points of their 11-point winning margin. It's perfectly reasonable that results in other games played on the day of the Cup Final (league football was played on Cup Final day in those days) could have confirmed that no team could make up the gap, even if Villa gained no points from their remaining games. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 18:05, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
- In fact, looking at the results on your link, it probably is true. Looks like Derby were the only team still close enough to overtake them. Villa had 41 points going in to Cup Final day, Derby had 34 with 4 games left, i.e. 7 points behind Villa with a possible 8 available. However Derby lost on Cup Final day, leaving them still 7 points adrift but with only 6 now available and thus mathematically unable to catch them. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 18:51, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
- I have now incorporated this information in the 1896-97 in English football article with a link from the Cup final article. Thanks for the links. --Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 07:00, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Not an online link but still... "On the afternoon of 10 April, Derby County lost to Bury, confirming Villa as League champions. If Villa defeated Everton, both legs of the double would be completed on on the same aftenoon."
from "Hamlyn Illustrated History Aston Villa 1874-1998" (Graham McColl). Page 25. In those days, it seems, it was common for Legaue matches to be played on the same day as the Cup final. This practice had long died out by the time Spurs became the next team to do the double in 1961. Hope this helps. --Villafancd (talk) 21:26, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Wrong photo
editThe team photo with the massive Sheriff of London Charity Shield is from 1899, not 1897. The FA Cup is not among the trophies. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7D:3266:6300:687C:15DF:FC19:6847 (talk) 22:13, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
