Shanghai?

edit

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography entry for Ronald Forbes Adam states:

In autumn 1936 he left the War Office to become commander Royal Artillery, 1st division, at Aldershot. The division was sent to Shanghai but the artillery remained behind. In September 1937 he was made commandant of the Staff College with the rank of major-general: a meteoric rise at a time of relative stagnation in the promotion system.

I have found this difficult to corroborate or determine how to incorporate into the article. For example, Lord and Watson state that the division was based at Aldershot from 1919 until 1939 (although they do note detachments dispatched for various tasks, but do not mention Shanghai). The Army Lists (Sep 36–37) also appear to support the division remaining in Aldershot. They do note a few changes in the makeup of the Guards brigade and the 3rd Brigade during that period. The 2nd Brigade is listed as being in Palestine/Transjordan before returning by the end of 1937, which lines up with what Lord and Watson state and I will work to add that in soon. It does not appear that these changes line up with the battalions assigned to Shanghai Area (2nd R.W. Fus, 2nd Loyals, and 1st R U Rifles; later replaced by the 1st DLI and Seaforth Highlanders), so I am at a loss.

Does anyone have any further information that will help tie this all together and make things clear?EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 17:49, 27 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
