Name
editThis Article was recently moved to 1st Naval Infantry Parachute Regiment without discussion or even an edit summary to explain why it was move. I would like to move it back to 1st Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment because that is the more common name in english. Carl Logan 08:13, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
Hmmm, it doesn't have to be discussed.--71.185.193.98 23:33, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
- Problem, it seems that there are now basically two of the same article with different names. One of these articles should be deleted. AustralianRupert (talk) 22:42, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
- Correction. Belay my last – the first article is now a redirect. Apologies. You may continue to fire at will, or at me...I really should check that they 'safety' is on. Cheers. AustralianRupert (talk) 22:46, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

Parachute - Paratroopers
editI moved the article from 1st Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment to 1st Marine Infantry Paratroopers Regiment as the correct translation of "Parachutistes" is "Paratroopers". However I now see that all French airborne units are listed with the "Parachute" name, although in French they are all use "Parachutistes". Before continuing editing this article (or editing others) I would like to know if these changes/moves are supported by other editors or if I should revert this article to 1st Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment. Thank you, noclador (talk) 08:09, 7 July 2019 (UTC)
- I just saw that there are two regiments that contain a double error in the translation of their name:
- 1er Régiment de Hussards Parachutistes, currently at 1st Parachute Hussar Regiment. Correct translation would be: 1st Hussars Paratroopers Regiment or (in case we stick with "Parachute") 1st Parachute Hussars Regiment
- 13e Régiment de Dragons Parachutistes, currently at 13th Parachute Dragoon Regiment. Correct translation would be: 13th Dragoons Paratroopers Regiment or (in case we stick with "Parachute") 1st Parachute Dragoons Regiment
- Should these articles be moved? noclador (talk) 08:17, 7 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Noclador: I do not know the answer to this question, assuming it still hasn’t gotten one. I am uncertain whether I am the editor who originally translated the unit names with “parachute”. While I am a fluent French to English translator, I have no particular military background and I have a vague memory of struggling to translate “parachutiste” since it seemed important to convey that these soldiers jumped out of airplanes and weren’t just any old infantry unit. If “paratroopers” conveys this, then perhaps it is a better translation. My suggestion would be that the SAS likely has an “official” translation of the names of units with which it is so closely associated. So if somebody is willing to do the deep dive, perhaps the thing to do would be to look at at a history of the SAS, perhaps in a history section on its website. I have not done this research myself and my focus has been on an accurate but readable translation of what was originally machine translation, standardizing format for readability and wiki linking where possible to make this quite technical article easier to understand. TL;DR : as someone that did a lot of the nuts and bolts translation, I have no objection to somebody changing the way the unit names are translated if a consensus develops or there is some other good reason to do so. - "Parachutiste" in French is both an adjective and a substantive (more accurately a nominatized adjective). "Hussards parachutistes" are Hussars who jump with parachutes, not Paratroopers who are also Hussars. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.167.255.177 (talk) 15:21, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
