Not the Gold Cup

edit

The title of this article needs to be changed to the Concacaf Women's Championship. The Concacaf Women's Gold Cup was played in 2000, 2002 and 2006. Concacaf reverted back to the title "Concacaf's Women's Championship" (as well as Women's World Cup Qualifying) before the 2010 tournament was played across the region. There are, unfortunately, several erroneous articles which use the incorrect title "Gold Cup" (including external source RSSF). Cheers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rscott187 (talkcontribs) 14:46, 23 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Antigua and Barbuda not eliminated with draw on 14 March

edit

They won't be mathematically eliminated having only 1 point. Remember when ranking runners-up from uneven groups the teams from the larger groups (in this case those with 4 teams) don't count points earned in matches against the last place team in their group. So, it's still a (not unreasonable) possibility that other runners-up would also have a loss and a draw against the 1st and 3rd teams in their group, thus tying with Antigua and Barbuda on points and then depending on goal differential to fix the rankings. When did Concacaf start doing this (UEFA and AFC do it, but Concacaf haven't in the past). The original definition was "2nd in 4-team groups + best 2nd from 3 team groups" (first group draw information release from Surinam Fed). I certainly haven't seen anything suggesting they will be adjusting for the size of groups. Do you have a source? Jlsa (talk) 04:24, 14 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Just an incorrect assumption on my part. I hadn't seen a source documenting it either way. I tried to find something on concacaf.com but could not. LarryJeff (talk) 04:30, 14 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

So, if only one of the runners-up from the 3-team groups makes the semifinals, then USVI would need to win by 6 goals to match Suriname on points and GD, right? LarryJeff (talk) 04:49, 14 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
IF it is split. The two sources have been "best 3 runners-up" and "2 from 4 team groups + best from 3 team groups". If it is the first then three points is all they need to get to, even if they are still behind Suriname as the runners-up in 3-team groups could only get 2 pts if the group end 9-2-2-2. (top team wins all 3, all other matches drawn) Jlsa (talk) 05:30, 14 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Based on this article ("Antigua & Barbuda can aim to be one of the best three runners-up") it would appear that it is "top 2 from 4 team groups, best from each 3 team + 1 other runner-up". Suriname is therefore out. This also matches both past practice from CONCACAF and the initial press release (and suggests that the Concacaf release was just being loose with jargon). I read the article and I'm not seeing it the same way. "With only one team going through from each group ... aim to be one of the best three runners-up". To me, that sounds like only the group winner--in all the groups--is guaranteed a spot in the next round, and we're stuck with "best three runners-up" and still no clear definition of how those spots are to be awarded. I'm not making any more changes to the article until I can find something reliable to back me up. It's really a shame that neither CONCACAF nor CFU seem to have anything on their websites to spell this out. LarryJeff (talk) 15:10, 15 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Point. Now. Moot. My source was right, but didn't give the full story. It is 1 runner-up from thee team groups, but they are all three team groups Jlsa (talk) 22:19, 15 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I was just looking at the schedule on concacaf.com again to see if I could find anything. I looked at the standings tab and saw 5 groups of 3. Oh, well.... LarryJeff (talk) 02:16, 16 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Result of last night's match?

edit

Is there no result posted anywhere for last night's match between St Kitts and Dominica? Unfortunately, the firewall here at work blocks any sports-related sites, so I can't look it up myself. LarryJeff (talk) 16:11, 18 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Head-to-head tiebreak in Central American groups?

edit

Do we know where (if at all) head-to-head tiebreakers will be used in the UNCAF qualifying groups? I assume head-to-head results would be the next tiebreaker after overall goal diff and goals scored, but I can't find anything on either the CONCACAF or UNCAF website. Anyway, if my assumption is correct, then Honduras would be eliminated if they defeat Costa Rica by 1-0. If that happens the best they could hope for is that Costa Rica beat Nicaragua by 1-0. All 3 teams would be tied with 3 pts and a GD of 0. Costa Rica would be eliminated with only 1 goal scored, while Nicaragua and Honduras would each have 2 goals scored. If the next tiebreaker is head-to-head then Nicaragua win that and advance as group winner. LarryJeff (talk) 02:26, 27 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

I would suggest they haven't thought that far ahead. Jlsa (talk) 02:35, 27 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, I figured the match would be played before we could ever find an answer, so it wouldn't matter anyway. LarryJeff (talk) 04:22, 27 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

FWIW, the men's qualification regulations (for 2009) had h-t-h as the first tiebreaker (which technically implies that GUA should have been ahead of SLV after their match in the other group if you want to follow the "these are the closest regs we'll find - may as well use them" rule). However, the wording would probably not split the tie you outline as there is no "if we split one team then go back to the start" provision. You could argue that there should be, but I'm pretty sure that the side that lost out would complain. Anyway, hopefully it won't be an issue. Jlsa (talk) 06:01, 27 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
