Title of the unit

edit

The article title says "582nd". The image caption and the body of the text say "582d".

Which is correct? Wanderer57 (talk) 18:14, 10 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Long running discussion on USAF ordinals. Changing in this article will only bring it up again. Redirects bring everyone here. --Lineagegeek (talk) 14:22, 9 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Article name

edit

Strict application of WP:MILMOS#UNITNAME would seem to call for this article to be renamed 472d Special Operations Wing because "[w]hen a unit or base has had multiple names over the course of its existence, the title should generally be the last name used." Because the unit has never been active under that name, it seems to me that the exception for "cases where the subject is clearly more commonly known by one of the previous names." applies, and a 582d designation should be kept.

This brings up the issue of which designation. The article is really about two units (although an earlier version of the article seemed to think they were one). The 582d AR&CW and its operational group, the 582d AR&CG (later the 582d Air Resupply Group). Although the unit trained as a wing, only the group and two of its squadrons deployed overseas and conducted operations. So the choices are:

472d Special Operations Wing This might also call for a merger with 472d Bombardment Group
Which I oppose for the reasons stated. --Lineagegeek (talk) 14:22, 9 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
582nd Air Resupply and Communications Wing and per the section above create a redirect from 582d Air Resupply and Communications Wing once a consensus on title is reached.
582d Air Resupply Group This would require admin action because it would be a move over a redirect.
My preference. Last 582d designation and operational designation. --Lineagegeek (talk) 14:22, 9 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Merger

edit

Since the 472d Bombardment Group was consolidated with this wing, the articles deserve merger. The 472d Group only was active as a training unit for seven months during World War II. Its notability primarily derives from being the first (?) B-29 unit in the AAF. As mentioned, the merged unit has never been active under its most recent name (472d Special Operations Wing), so the present name of the article is appropriate. --Lineagegeek (talk) 12:42, 17 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
