It looks like this is the same unit as that described at 9th Illinois Infantry Regiment (Mounted), it was just redesignated as a mounted infantry unit in 1863. Perhaps it was mustered out and reformed as mounted infantry with new soldiers, but I doubt it. In any case, the "mounted" article says it was formed from the infantry unit in 1863, but says they were at the Battle of Shiloh, among others, in 1862. Seems pretty clear this is a content fork, or at best, a poorly executed and unnecessary split. Warrants a merge in my view, but just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything I was missing, given the history of page moves and such here. Mdewman6 (talk) 01:31, 13 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
I amended the merge proposal to also merge in 9th Illinois Infantry Regiment (3 Months). The 3 Years article already discusses the regiments origins and activities with the 3-month enlistees; this is a clear content fork. All 3 articles are discussing different time periods of the history the same regiment; they should all be in one article. The content is not even close to being so extensive that having multiple articles would need to be considered. Once merged, I will WP:USURPTITLE the dab page I created at the base name, 9th Illinois Infantry Regiment, having a single article at that name, and the dab page will no longer be necessary. - Based on my cursory reading, User:Mdewman6's assessment seems accurate (and I was the fellow swinging big page-move/category-discuss elbows last winter). At that time I noticed several articles which needed merging, didn't notice this one. Good eyes. I endorse actions which bring these three pages into one article titled as suggested. - Support merge, which seems reasonable; base title should then be at 9th Illinois Infantry Regiment. Hog Farm Talk 15:56, 15 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
