The birthdate is listed as 1941 - this is inline with his age at debut —Preceding unsigned comment added by Karthikaya (talkcontribs) 11:06, 30 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

--- Math problem with his age...he's listed as being born in 1936, but then later in the article it says he made his debut at age 17 in 1958 (implying that he was born in 1940 or 1941)

Somebody with a reliable source for his birthday should fix that

What the hell are those deep, permanent cuts on the top of his head from? Buzda 10:21, 1 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

If you've ever seen any of his matches (or even clips from his matches), you'd notice that he often bleed during his matches (with typically large amounts of blood). Blading that much over such a long period of time (six decades) is bound to leave some scars. Jeff Silvers 23:17, 8 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

He had those surgically done to enhance his apperance. Those groves are huge and not consistent with gig marks. I am a pro wrestler, I can verify this.64.12.116.132 17:14, 9 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

However, it wasn't just blading, it was also getting jabbed in the forehead with pencils and forks and whatever else was available.--Darren Jowalsen 15:31, 23 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

My understanding of the grooves is that they're from chair slams over the head. I saw him perform a few years back and a steel folding chair became part of the act. But it would not surprise me that they were created surgically. Bleeding seems to have been part of the style of wrestling going decades back. Marty55 03:21, 7 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Actual height?

edit

I wonder what Abdullah's actual height is. I have heard that wrestlers are always billed as being taller than they really are. There is a long, unending discussion on the Andre the Giant page about Andre's height. I just downloaded an old match where Andre and Abdullah faced off. If Abdullah really was 6'1", then I can see how Andre could have been 7' or taller. If Abdullah was less than 6'1", then I can believe more easily those people who claim Andre was no more than 6'10" - or an absolute maximum of 6'11". 70.54.127.227 16:39, 8 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Karate and judo knowledge

edit

Okay, so the intro states "knows a minimal amount of judo and karate", while the career part states he "eventually earning the title of seventh-degree grandmaster". Now what? I will now remove the deprecatory "minimal amount" part of the intro and added a "citation needed" to the other remark. Tierlieb (talk) 21:08, 17 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Cleanup

edit

Quote : "Consequently, he was often brought into a territory as a hired gun to destroy a popular fan favorite, and his appearances usually sparked local interest since others." Since others what? Enquiring minds would like to know. Also "A sadistic and bloodthirsty hardcore wrestler in history has established a legacy." Just abysmal grammar. I don't know enough about Abby to fix the whole page, but surely he deserves a better article than this?VonBlade (talk) 22:35, 14 January 2009 (UTC) Apparently no one bothered to proofread the text before submitting. Lots of sutff in there makes absolutely no sense. Also, the article states that The Grand Wizard of wrestling managed him but I've never heard or seen any pictures or footage of them together. The Wizard had a reputation of only managing guys wo were not quite as hardcore, with the exception of the original Sheik. Please, as a longtime wrestling fan (since 1969) I implore SOMEBODY with proper info about Abby to come forward and edit this article! Ernie C72.87.81.220 (talk) 22:36, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

War over photo

edit

I see that a war seems to have broken out between some wanting to remove the photo, and others insisting it remain there. It's been deleted and then brought back twice now I believe. The complaint is that it is too graphically violent. For certain it is a great horror shot. Marty55 (talk) 19:29, 28 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Look At The Photo

edit

The photo being used blatently exposes professional wrestling. You can clearly see he's blading the guy. -- User:Lawrence142002 —Preceding undated comment added 05:25, 15 June 2009 (UTC).Reply

Article issues

edit
  • The most recent edit was a deletion due to "unsourced negative information." While the deleted content doesn't provide a specific cited source, it does refer to Maclean's (though misspelled in the article). To claim or imply that Maclean's is not a reliable source would be rather foolish. On the other hand, the article's lead contains the following: "The scars in his forehead are said to be a result of frequent blading...However, New Jack claimed in his RF Video shoot interview that the grooves in Shreve's head were surgically implemented." Two issues here. First, the cited source is a YouTube page. Not only is YouTube widely regarded on Wikipedia as not being a reliable source, but that particular video has since been pulled by request of RF Video. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, it's probably safe to say that New Jack was in elementary school back when Abdullah was wrestling in main events with deep scars in his forehead. How can New Jack possibly be considered an authority on this matter? The continued existence of that content in the article breaks all sorts of conventions.
I've removed it for those reasons. InedibleHulk (talk) 23:10, 30 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • "He has, however, spoken for himself in promos while in Japan, where they aren't considered as important in getting a wrestler over." Uh, more like Japan treats professional wrestling in an entirely different light, and American-style kayfabe rules don't necessarily apply there. Remember that English is spoken in more than just the United States, and that you shouldn't be writing as if this will only be read by Americans.
While this seems to be true, from what I've seen of Japanese wrestling (a fair bit), it does somewhat smell of original research. I've left it, but don't totally condone it. InedibleHulk (talk) 23:10, 30 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'll look into this. InedibleHulk (talk) 23:10, 30 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

He was in a Japanese movie once, if anyone wants to integrate that information into the page...

Jack Britton

edit

I noticed a minor snafu when talking about Abdullah's debut. It mentions that he was first discovered by Jack Britton, which is true, but it's not the same Jack Britton that the hyperlink suggests. The welterweight boxer Jack Britton is NOT the wrestling promoter Jack Britton, two different people with the same name. Tydrin (talk) 00:52, 6 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

I think he had something to do with Bruiser Brody's death

He's not actually Sudanese

In this article, it says that he's half African American and half Blackfoot First Nations. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2007-may-06-na-abdullah6-story.html SpaceboundRocket (talk) 01:48, 23 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
