More neutral (encyclopedic) tone needed

edit

Firstly, good on the main writer/contributor for Wikipedia-ing an Australian entertainment event. I'm all for it! I just want to try to help improve the article by pointing out that following is clearly a personal opinion: "The Adelaide Fringe is widely regarded as one of the best events of its kind in the world and is renowned for fresh ideas, risk, imagination, spontaneity and fun." Ok, this is clearly a claim about an allegedly wide-spread opinion. The absence of any substantiation/citation/reference to back it up it just contributes to making the article sound slightly like an promotional piece (and that, of course, is not what people go to Wikipedia for). The more dispassionately informative it can be, the more readers will be able to respect it as a reliable source of information. --Tyranny Sue (talk) 04:01, 24 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Jan 2010 It is still far too promotional and not informational. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.130.22.107 (talk) 13:34, 4 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Removing blatantly advertorial content/fancruft, fixing punctuation, wording, grammar, removing redundant & irrelevant material, etc. now. Any objections, please discuss here. (But please remember, this is an encyclopedia, not primarily an advertising opportunity.) -- TyrS  chatties  08:14, 22 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Adelaide Fringe will now be annual

edit

The Premier just announced (about two and a half hours ago) that the Adelaide Fringe will now be an annual event instead of only biennial. Not Wikinews worthy, but you'll probably see it in tommorrow's paper... Alphax τεχ 13:07, 5 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm fairly sure that policy was announced last week. At this stage, it's only an election pledge and if Rann isn't returned (giggles) there's no guarrantee the Liberals will feel obliged to match it.--cj | talk 02:20, 6 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Relative size?

edit

This article says the Adelaide Fringe is the third-largest in the world, but nearly every other source I've seen says it's second only to Edinburgh. Anyone seen any evidence to back up one or the other? -- Guybrush 10:11, 12 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Second-largest is correct. It was changed to third by an anon. I'll add references when I get around to rewriting the article.--cj | talk 13:56, 12 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

The importance of this festival is downplayed here. It is competive with Edinburgh and growing every year. Suggest Fringe Shows be linked directly to this page, particularly those selected for awards by the festival judges.(123.2.53.91 (talk) 08:21, 9 February 2008 (UTC))Reply

Blatant advertising removed

edit

I've just done a bunch of work to make this sound more like an encyclopedia article and less like an advertisement. The following is some examples of the type of material that should not be put back in - unless it's in the form of a third party quote - due to its blatantly unencyclopedic, promotional tone:

"Offering a massive selection of shows ... artists squeeze shows into every nook and cranny around town creating a wonderful collection of weird and eccentric venues ... the Fringe completely takes over the entire city and Adelaide’s balmy summer nights keep venues and bars busy into the small hours with artists and their audiences ... enjoy the festival’s exciting arts performances and party atmosphere...
