Number of nominations
editAccording to the Academy's offical records (the database is at Oscar's offical website), Newman's nominations for 1937 (for "The Prisoner of Zenda" and "The Hurricane") are not officially counted as nominations for Newman. Consequently, according to the Academy, Newman was only officially nominated 43 times. see: http://www.oscars.org/awardsdatabase/ --Dole2007 29 September 2007 (UTC)
--The Academy bestowed nominations on the composers who's scores where nominated during that time, thus Newman has 43 Nominations and 2 Honoree Nominations making 45. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.147.173.88 (talk) 17:01, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
Demetrius and the Gladiators
editIsn't Demetrius and the Gladiators score by Franz Waxman ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.10.162.138 (talk) 02:38, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
Son of Fury
editIt`s incredible that in the article there´s not a word about "Son of Fury", perhaps the most beautiful and ambitious work of Alfred Newman. The score is edited in CD, and it´s difficult to find a cinematographic score of these quality. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lincoln R. Date of birth
editAlfred Newman's date of birth is given as 17 March 1900 by
- The Oxford Grove Music Encyclopedia.
- The Los Angeles Times (excerpt from his obituary).
- The US Social Security Death Index, SSN 551-03-1314.
all of which are more authoritative than the IMDB. A date of birth in 1900 is also consistent with the statement later in this Wikipedia article that "Newman died on February 17, 1970 exactly a month before his 70th birthday".
While it is true that his memorial plaque at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale reads "1901-1970", the most definitive evidence is that he appears in the 1900 US Census, age 2 months, New Haven, Connecticut, Ward 4, sheet 5. Had he been born in 1901, he could not have appeared on that census, at all. I realize that this is from a primary source, but it provides irrefutable clarification of which secondary sources are correct and which are incorrect. It should be noted that the obituaries from AP and UPI at the time of his death, which appeared in hundreds of newspapers across the country, were incorrect. The LA Times got it right. Fred Steiner, who worked with Newman and wrote a dissertation on his early development, gives 1900 in the Dictionary of American Biography (Supplement). Therefore I've reverted the date to 1900.Rozsaphile1 (talk) 03:28, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
Conundrum
editCan an editor expand the curious apparent contradiction of "a time when composers were not eligible to be nominated in the score category" to render the conundrum intelligible?--Wetman (talk) 02:43, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

Change picture to a more recent picture
editA picture of the man as a young boy doesn't represent how he looked in his prime or how most would picture him. 2603:8001:4F00:A0F:119D:331E:4079:11BB (talk) 08:09, 26 February 2022 (UTC)
- I agree! – Kavyansh.Singh (talk) 20:55, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
- I would assume it was chosen because its in public domain. Still though, it's rather bizarre and I'm sure we could find a non-free file rationale for a later photo... Aza24 (talk) 21:52, 7 August 2024 (UTC)

– Legendary film composer, who had been nominated for a record 45 Academy Awards, was the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC from the date of his article's creation (8 April 2004) until 31 August 2012 when the main title header was unilaterally moved to Alfred Newman (composer). There are eight entries listed upon the Alfred Newman disambiguation page, with the composer likely to have greater renown than the combined notability of the remaining seven entries. As extreme comparison, there are 157 entries upon the John Williams (disambiguation) page, with the film composer listed as the primary topic over the remaining 156 entries. —Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 21:38, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- Support. Pageview analysis suggests that the composer is overwhelmingly the primary topic for the Alfred Newman name. ModernDayTrilobite (talk • contribs) 14:19, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
- Support per nom, seems to be PRIMARY.--Ortizesp (talk) 22:47, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
