A few comments:

  • For a first article, this shows a remarkable grasp of the rules concerning the form, structure and referencing of a WP article. I imagine that either you spent a long time on one of the "how to..." pages, or that you had an earlier incarnation, perhaps as an IP? Whatever, the article, though short, is pretty good as a first effort.
  • I can find only a few things that I would change:
  • Perhaps expand the lead by a sentence or to, so that it is summary of the whole article.
  • One or two terms are perhaps a little too everyday in nature to warrant wikilinks. I refer particularly to "chemist" and "postgraduate", but you could check for others
  • You should be consistent about whether to use numerals or words for values of 10 or more. At themoment you have "10" and "78", but also "ninety"
  • Maybe the sources don't say, but do you know why, specifically, February 1929 was nominated as "Alice Ball Day"? There doesn't seem to be any connection between this day and her life and work.
  • I think the article is worth a B classification and have changed its ratings. I also consider that "medium importance" rather than "low importance" is appropriate.

If you are intending to work on other articles, give me a shout if you would like me to take a look. PS: in future would you please sign yourself with your username by using the four tildes. Brianboulton (talk) 22:31, 25 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Background on Alice Ball

edit

For the Wikipedia page, I suggest that it includes more about her childhood upbringing and early life. I am curious to find out more about Alice Ball and her experiences since it is known that she was not recognized until much later. It is unfortunate that more isn’t known about what shaped her as a person and how much sexism and racism impacted her research. I believe that more isn’t known about her simply because her accomplishments, though significant, were disregarded because of her sex and her race. I am glad that a century later, she is better known, that her research has helped the scientific world, and that it has earned her acknowledgement.

I would like to know what type of family she had and how it led to her interest in chemistry. Additionally, information about her personal life outside of her education and career would be very interesting. It would be good to investigate whether or not she was able to have relationships during the time of her research or if she dedicated all of her time towards her study. A subheading could be made for the personal about her personal life and her childhood. Alice Ball’s Wikipedia page should also separate her early life from her education and add more about her educational experiences since she should be recognized for her accomplishment as the first woman to earn a master’s degree. As a pioneer for women and people of color in chemistry, it is important to highlight how the two factors affected her involvement in chemistry and what barriers that hindered her from accomplishing more.

Alice Ball’s Wikipedia includes some substantial information about her background and her contributions in science however; her article can be improved upon with additional understanding of her personal life and the impacts of being a female and woman of science had on her work. I believe that it is important to recognize what shaped Alice Ball into who she since it reflects why she chose to pursue a higher education and go into leprosy research. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Flightless13wings (talkcontribs) 15:29, 5 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Flightless13wings: Welcome to Wikipedia! It's great that you are interested in Alice Ball and want to know more. There is no guarantee, however, that anyone will be able to answer your questions soon (I don't have the time). You might be better to go directly to the references and read them. You are also welcome to add material to the article, keeping in mind that it has to conform to core Wikipedia policies like verifiability. I would add a special caution because you are interested in subjective issues like the impacts on her work of being female. Avoid the temptation of putting together a few facts and drawing your own conclusions: Wikipedia does not accept original research. The unfortunate fact is that, being black and female and living in that era, she probably doesn't have a well-documented personal life. RockMagnetist(talk) 00:20, 6 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Professor?? Its said Ball become a professor at the Hawaiian University. Really? Or did she got job as one of the university teachears, by tradition politely called by students as professor? Ball had barely a fresh master degree, and got employed as it seems for me as sooner in assistant role. (even if she apparently did indenpendent major scientific work). A university professor candidate needs usually a doctor´s degree, and also some background as minimum, to even dare to seek. A professor in a local college may have less. OR?? So, did she got the professor title for real, or is it a misunderstanding, and she got job as a university teacher of "lower degree"?/StefanZ213.64.147.208 (talk) 08:30, 31 December 2019 (UTC)/StefanZReply

A few suggestions I think Alice Ball is a phenomenal person and her work is often overlooked. To add to this article, perhaps include information about her Master thesis and how this led to her work on Hanson's disease. What made her master thesis stand out? In addition, more information regarding her upbringing could be included such as her parents labeling themselves "white" on her birth certificate, how did that affect Ball? Further information regarding how she discovered the method of turning the oil into an ester compound to make it react better with the human body, what led her to that discovery? Finally, more information on how racism impacted her life/after her death should be elaborated on. Myokgy (talk) 21:41, 25 September 2020 (UTC)myokgyReply
