Adoption of Chinese citizenship
editIn the section on Citizenship, I removed this (unreferenced):
and this (with no clear connection made to the article):
- This is because Canada allows resumption of citizenship for a small fee. In addition, Germany also allows immediate resumption of citizenship for German-born nationals.

I would argue this is VERY relevant: When I heard that Zeman had adopted Chinese citizenship, and that China does not allow dual nationality, the first thought in my mind was "why in God's name would ANYONE give up their Canadian citizenship for a Hong Kong SAR passport?" Knowing that he can regain it changes everything, as does knowing that he can also easily obtain an EU passport. By the way, Canadians, unlike citizens of the US, are NOT taxed on their income unless they are resident in Canada, so it matters not how much money he makes / has, if he does not live in Canada, he does not pay taxes there. The US, by the way, is the ONLY country in the world to demand its citizens to pay taxes even when they do not even live there (the Philipines used to be the other one of the almost 200 countries in the world to do this, but they abolished that policy sometime in the 1990s). It does not answer the question though of why he would give up his Canadian citizenship... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nealmcgrath (talk • contribs) 07:52, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

Alan's father versus Alan
editIn the section that says "Allan Zeman's father died when he was eighty years old, and he started working at the age of ten." This is unclear: Was Alan's father 80 when he died, or was Alan 80 when his father died? And WHO was ten when he started working, Alan or his father? This needs to be clarified by someone who knows the answer. User:nealmcgrath —Preceding undated comment added 07:56, 4 July 2011 (UTC).
Home Return Permit
editHas the fact that Zeman holds a Home Return Permit been independantly confirmed? I know many ethnic Chinese who were not able to get them and the reason the HK Immigration Department provided was that they were not born in Hong Kong or China, but born overseas. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Neilmcgrath (talk • contribs)
- Home Return Permits are issued on the strength of a person's Chinese citizenship, not ethnicity. Zeman unambiguously naturalised as a Chinese citizen, therefore he can get a Home Return Permit if he wants, and in fact cannot travel to mainland China any other way.
- Ethnic Chinese are only issued with home return permits if they can prove that they are actually Chinese citizens. (There is lots of confusion regarding this fact because of the way the Immigration Department issued *** HKIDs back in the 80s). Specifically, they have to prove that they are not excluded from Chinese citizenship by Article 5 of the Nationality Law:
- Any person born abroad whose parents are both Chinese nationals or one of whose parents is a Chinese national shall have Chinese nationality. But a person whose parents are both Chinese nationals and have both settled abroad, or one of whose parents is a Chinese national and has settled abroad, and who has acquired foreign nationality at birth shall not have Chinese nationality.
- This is why their place of birth (and their parents' visa status at the time of birth) matters. In Zeman's case it is irrelevant because there is no question about his citizenship status. 61.18.190.183 (talk) 10:20, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
