I find the colorized photo quite disconcerting. Is it just me? Jd2718 23:01, 24 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Requested move

edit

This article has been renamed from Allen "Farina" Hoskins to Allen Hoskins as the result of a move request.

The following is a closed discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was - unopposed move of all articles involved. Keith D (talk) 23:56, 13 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Moving a block of Our Gang child actors to new namespaces to remove the nicknames from the titles (perhaps to match George McFarland and Carl Switzer?). While this is a more or less uncontroversial move, Oanabay04 (talk · contribs) attempted cut and paste moves. A moderator is now needed to move these pages and preserve the histories of each. --FuriousFreddy (talk) 03:04, 8 January 2008 (UTC) (Copied from WP:RM[1] --Lox (t,c))Reply

Discussion

  • Support all of these moves (no reason to have nicknames). My thoughts regarding the remaining actor (not listed above) is:
Eugene "Porky" LeeEugene Lee (American actor) (to differentiate between Eugene Lee (actor) --Lox (t,c) 09:48, 8 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
The other Eugene Lee is also American (Asian-American), as he was born in California. That's why I suggested leaving Eugene "Porky" Lee where it is; or perhaps going with Eugene Gordon Lee, since Lee changed his name as an adult to add the middle name, and went by "Gordon". --FuriousFreddy (talk) 19:54, 8 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
My mistake, Eugene Gordon Lee seems a good choice --Lox (t,c) 20:02, 8 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Missing credits

edit

list of credits in the movie "Mayor of Hell" lists Allen "Farina" Hoskins as playing Joliet "Smoke" Hemingway! The list of works in Wikipedia Allen Hoskins does not reflect this fact, my guess is there may be more! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kingfred777 (talkcontribs) 07:50, 22 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Didn't he have a Son, named Michael? 47.18.40.127 (talk) 17:48, 6 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

suggested edit of point 1.1.1 - use of the term "Pickaninny"

edit

Original: "Farina resembled a pickaninny[1] in the tradition of the character Topsy from Uncle Tom's Cabin"

Reason for Change: "Pickaninny" is defined at the Wikipedia link as a "derogatory" term. Its current use is controversial, as evidenced by the quotes on that Wiki page.

Editorially, it would serve the article on Allen Hoskins better if the intent behind the use of the word "Pickaninny" were expressly written.

I am not familiar enough with ″Uncle Tom's Cabin″ to be able to make a suggestion based on its characters and content, i.e. "Farina was styled as a [simple? poor? uneducated?] black child in the tradition of the character Topsy from Uncle Tom's Cabin""

I would suggest the following edit: "Farina initially was styled simply, in the tradition of the character Topsy from Uncle Tom's Cabin"

Support for Edit: The suggested edit also would jive with the article's subsequent phrase which indicates that the character of Farina became more nuanced as Allen Hoskins got older and changed the Farina character. Indeed, as Allen Hoskins was playing the role of "Farina" from the age of one, you even could add The very young" at the beginning, i.e. "The very young Farina initially was styled simply, in the tradition of the character Topsy from Uncle Tom's Cabin" - but that is an inference on my part. I am not clear that that was the case. In my experience, the behaviour and appearance of a one- to two-year old mirrors the adults in charge of the child more than it expresses its own self. When the young Allen Hoskins began to show his own personality more overtly, the simplified "pickaninny" caricature for Farina no longer applied.

First time doing this and am posting though it is not 100% according to Wikipedia's protocol. Tried my best. 99.172.22.183 (talk) 17:28, 6 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

I must admit, in reading this article, I was very moved by the care, and interest in this former child actor's life. Obviously, as much as the rest of the "Little Rascals" fame and adorability moved many adults and children, it seemed 'specious" in those horrid times of "white supremacism", and segregation that several little black children were revered as "idols" in Hollywood --146.111.156.100 (talk) 19:00, 14 September 2015 (UTC)VeryverserReply

absurdly overdone

edit

This is supposed to be about one actor, not the whole Little Rascals / Our Gang franchise. 47.140.183.231 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 02:27, 19 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
