Requested move 21 October 2017
edit- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: not moved. -- Tavix (talk) 20:28, 27 October 2017 (UTC)
Anaheim, California → Anaheim – Anaheim in Orange County, California is the only place named Anaheim – and is a well known name, when in reference to the city, readers will know where that is. Anaheim is the largest city in Orange County and third largest in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Since is very unlikely that Anaheim would refer to anything else but the city, the City of Anaheim should not have the state name after it. Move per WP:COMMONNAME. Look at places such as Denver, Honolulu, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Boston, Oklahoma City, and Salt Lake City, which don't have the state after the name. Anaheim is as well known, even more so, as the largest city in Orange County and home to Disneyland. CookieMonster755 𝚨-𝛀 00:44, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
- About the examples, see long disambig lists Denver (disambiguation) and Boston (disambiguation). I have been to Boston, Lincolnshire but not to anywhere in the USA. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 04:41, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:USPLACE. Which, by the way, is not a guideline I actually support. I just maintain that it should be overhauled as a whole rather than on a case-by-case basis like this. Nohomersryan (talk) 06:40, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose per the WP:USPLACE guideline. Anaheim is NOT one of the 20 or so cities currently listed in the AP Stylebook source as not requiring the state modifier, per WP:USPLACE. Since the AP and a large majority of American news media using the AP Style Book primary use "Anaheim, California" with the state modifier, that is a common name in American English -- precisely one of reasons why the USPLACE guideline continues to have consensus (see Wikipedia:Perennial proposals#Remove state from US placenames). I would also counter that the city itself may not be well known outside the United States; from a worldwide audience perspective, it may be considered part of Los Angeles given it's proximity (which is probably one reason why the AP Stylebook source does not include Anaheim on its list). What's also confusing is that Anaheim's baseball team is called the Los Angeles Angels. Thus, you have articles in national American newspapers like USA Today where it references "Anaheim, Calif." in the fourth paragraph, not merely "Anaheim".[1] Zzyzx11 (talk) 08:26, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose for reasons listed above. Fettlemap (talk) 17:59, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose this move 2601:541:4304:E6B0:218:8BFF:FE74:FE4F (talk) 18:49, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose please propose a change to WP:USPLACE if you want this to happen. Or find a way to ask the Associated Press to add Anaheim to the cities they refer to without a state. power~enwiki (π, ν) 04:20, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
- The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
Merger Proposal
editI propose merging Anaheim Resort into Anaheim, California. The resort article is a stub that doesn't stand on its own and it would fit in better as part of the larger entry on the city. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 107.77.211.36 (talk) 08:00, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
Having waited the standard week and noting no discussion, I will now make the merge. (Same editor as above, working from a different spot) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2603:3006:E3F:C100:ACE9:DC20:65C1:868C (talk) 21:38, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
@Discospinster: I redirected “Angel Grove” to here because
- the Angels baseball club plays here.
- the Power Rangers convention was held here until the COVID disease. Now do hold it in Pasadena.
- The term "Angel Grove" does not appear anywhere in the Anaheim, California article, nor is that the name of the stadium they play at. ... discospinster talk 14:10, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
- the Angels play at Angel Stadium. It’s a nickname for the county/township itself. 134.6.158.254 (talk) 18:48, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
