– Today, UALR announced that their sports teams would be known as the "Little Rock Trojans." However, one person is reverting all the changes I'm making because it's not yet the WP:COMMONNAME he says (never mind that, per branding guidelines, all media outlets will be required to refer to them as "Little Rock" in news, scores and other media). • Oppose - Per WP:COMMONNAME. Until reliable sources like the national media (Associated Press, ESPN, Fox Sports, CBS Sports, NBC Sports, Yahoo! Sports, etc.) adopt the Little Rock branding as the common name for the university's athletic teams, I believe Arkansas–Little Rock Trojans should remain the common name used on Wikipedia. • Oppose for now - 1) This generally isn't done, immediately, 2) There are identical cases where the university's desired rebranding didn't stick, 3) Without strong consensus, this will be revisited for years.       • Traditionally Wikipedians have dropped the "university of" from "University of..." articles, such as University of Kansas Jayhawks/Kansas Jayhawks or Ohio State University Buckeyes are Ohio State Buckeyes. It stands to reason that "University of Arkansas-Little Rock" is shortened to Arkansas–Little Rock Trojans. Therefore, I oppose moving the article.--Paul McDonald (talk) 20:55, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

• Oppose - Agree with the WP:COMMONNAME comments. I can't find any major independent sources, ESPN, CBS, Yahoo!, etc. that have picked up the name change. I say this move should be tabled for two months and bring it up again when all of the season preview articles and mags are released. Even if they aren't usually covered in detail by the major outlets, many at least release a 1-350 ranking of the sport in September or October. If they're all calling the team "Little Rock" by then, it can be changed at that time. Given that this is only an athletics rebranding and not a university change, it's not yet certain that the common name will change. SCMatt33 (talk) 22:11, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

Revisiting the move

So, it's now March, the Trojans are in the NCAA Tournament, and more and more sources are referring to them as "Little Rock" (including CBS Sports). Around when should we reconsider and give the move to "Little Rock" another look? Tom Danson (talk) 18:51, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

I glanced at the CBK labels on the larger sports sites, and then the headlines therein. Page headers are mixed:

– When the switch was announced on July 1, 2015, I did a previous rename request, but it was declined because "Little Rock Trojans" was not yet the WP:COMMONNAME. However, with the passage of time and the basketball program gaining a higher profile, more and more news sources have recognized them as the Little Rock Trojans (e.g., Yahoo! Sports, CBS Sports, Fox Sports and NBC Sports). For some reason, ESPN, USA Today and AP still list them as "Arkansas-Little Rock," but they are a minority compared to the majority of sources I've listed. As such, I believe that "Little Rock Trojans" is now the common name, and the move should be effective. Tom Danson (talk) 00:06, 26 August 2016 (UTC)

• Support – I'm in favor of the name change (all articles and cats), as I've been since July 2015. If you want to rely on a "quick" Google search, Arkansas–Little Rock is considered the common name, not Little Rock. The AP still calls them A-LR, as well as a local newspaper The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Of the two local newspapers, the Arkansas Times is the only local newspaper that has begun using Little Rock. Local TV Stations – KATV and KLRT-TV – are using "Little Rock" (KATV, KLRT-TV). Corkythehornetfan (ping me) 00:54, 26 August 2016 (UTC)

@Lizard the Wizard: It was more for UW Dawgs' statement: "Should also review editorial stories (AP, local, season preview/rankings, etc) rather than major media's..." I was basically showing what the locals and AP calls it. I was just going off of the number of hits for Google search, but I didn't read any of the articles (which could use the new branding in the actual article). I believe that if the major news sources call a sports team by their branding, then we should go with that. Does that clarify things? Corkythehornetfan (ping me) 19:17, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

• Oppose - for now, but relist, soon. Seeing a low volume of sources in both directions, but little national coverage since they don't play football as a major fall sport. Would like to revisit when all media outlets are generating reasonable coverage (ie, basketball season, which explicitly isn't the lone criteria, but allow review of all media outlets and their annual updates to hex colors, db strings, editorial guidelines, etc). • Mild support – The NCAA now uses "Little Rock" instead of "Arkansas–Little Rock" or "UALR". See the NCAA's official school page for UALR athletics; although the URL includes "ualr", the page is prominently titled "Little Rock". — Dale Arnett (talk) 04:54, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
