Proposed rewrite

With due respect to all who have edited this article previously, I think it could be improved enormously. It containts some very unencyclopaedic writing (e.g. in section 1.1 Introduction), is entirely US-centric, and contains some very broad and sometimes bizarre sweeping statements about what astronomers do. It seems to me actually most of the article could be deleted, and replaced with a much more concise summary of what astronomers do. Would anyone else support a substantial re-write and compression of this article? Worldtraveller 14:54, 20 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Most of the middle section was added December 26 and reads like a school essay about careers rather than an encyclopedia article. I trimmed a fair bit of it, but it could probably still be tightened up. -- Curps 23:06, 20 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Hipparchus

Why was Hipparchus removed? He is one of the really famous astronomers, the most famous of the old ones, see the article about him.

Giovanni DonCara

Astronomy as a career?

I’m just wondering, how does one study for astronomy as a career? Do you study Physics and then branch off into something like Astrophysics, or what? This is partly out of personal interest, and of course because it should be explained in the article. — NRen2k5 19:35, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Depends on th euniversity and country. But I would guess that one of the most common paths are some version of physics/astronomy/astrophysics studies as an undergrad, then PhD-studies in astronomy, then postdoc (if you are lucky) for a couple of years in order to get a tenure at a university. Not an easy path, and a lot of people who tries it does not succeed all the way (as is the cas for all academic careers.) Mossig (talk) 21:16, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
