I have corrected the names of the Union commanders of the armies. The Army of the Tennessee was commanded by James McPherson. The Army of the Ohio was commanded by John Schofield. The Army of the Cumberland was commanded by George Thomas.

Correction on Geography of Atlanta Campaign

edit

Most of the fighting in the Atlanta Campaign took place in northwest Georgia not the northeastern section. Swatson1978 21:54, 30 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

To the anonymous editor who continues to make uncited changes to this article: the material on the armies' organization and strength is cited from a couple of references shown in the footnotes. If you have alternative sources, you need to make them known and not simply change the numbers. Also, listings of Confederate armies do not include an Army of the Heartland or Army of the Gateway, and the generals you list do not appear in battle descriptions to which I have access. Please desist unless you can document your changes. Hal Jespersen (talk) 00:56, 21 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Just reverted this again. Probably best to start putting warning messages from WP:UTM on the talk page of the anon IPs so a block can be requested it if continues. --Roswell native (talk) 19:29, 21 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

File:Atlanta roundhouse ruin3.jpg to appear as POTD soon

edit

Hello! This is a note to let the editors of this article know that File:Atlanta roundhouse ruin3.jpg will be appearing as picture of the day on September 2, 2011. You can view and edit the POTD blurb at Template:POTD/2011-09-02. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page so Wikipedia doesn't look bad. :) Thanks! howcheng {chat} 16:23, 1 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

In the American Civil War, the Union and Confederate armies fought a series of battles as the former sought to capture the city of Atlanta, Georgia. The Confederate general John Bell Hood dissipated his army in a series of bold, but fruitless assaults, and was compelled to evacuate the city, allowing the Union to occupy it on September 2, 1864.
