Car vs motor mechanic
editThe first sentence is clearly wrong. It should be car mechanic in Australia and motor mechanic in Britian. Tim. 22/2/11 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.225.42.254 (talk) 05:44, 22 February 2011 (UTC) cars should be driven and engines repaired — Preceding unsigned comment added by 197.221.253.11 (talk) 11:13, 19 August 2017 (UTC)
A mechanic is not a technician
editThey are two different careers in the same field. It isn't any different than trying to call a paramedic or x-ray technician a doctor because they are in the medical field. Or a nurse and doctor. Technicians do diagnostic work of a technical nature. Of all the places to get this information (besides the source which wiki doesn't like), look here. [1] "It used to be simple mechanical repair.". It still is. There are positions of parts installers, mechanics, tire specialists, and technicians in automotive, along with other specialites. "Today it is a high technology job.". But only for technicians. Mechanics still replace pads and rotors, but probably don't diagnose the ABS system, whereas the technician does.
Should this page be protected?
editI see relatively consistent vandalism. If you agree, then either post here or make the request, but I'd like consensus. (HarryKernow (talk) 08:56, 28 December 2015 (UTC))
amateur automobile maintenance and repair
editMany Wikipedia articles allude to people who occasionally do minor automobile maintenance and repair or motorcycle maintenance and repair, but are not professional auto mechanics or motorcycle mechanic.
Should (properly cited) information about such people go into a section of this "auto mechanic" article, the "handyman" article, or a separate Wikipedia article about such people?
Is there a WP:COMMONNAME for these people and their work?
In Wikipedia alone, such people have been referred to as: "do-it-yourself mechanic" -- Turbo-Hydramatic 125; "Shade Tree Mechanic" -- Henry Oden; "Auto enthusiasts" and "hobbyists to repair vehicles" -- on-board diagnostics; "motorcycle enthusiasts ... perform simple maintenance jobs" -- motorcycle lift; "many car enthusiasts modify their cars" -- effects of the car on societies; "automotive enthusiasts and "do-it-yourself customers" -- some Category:Auto_parts_suppliers; and alluded to (without a specific name) in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance; custom car; and hot rod articles.
