editI am thinking of changing the name of this article to Mechanical lubricator and including the Wakefield and Detroit types (which are not displacement lubricators) in the same article. Please give your views. Biscuittin (talk) 13:04, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

- A displacement lubricator works by the hydrostatic displacement of oil by water and a mechanical lubricator is a pump. These terms are mutually exclusive, so if the article is to include both types, neither name is erm... ideal. Steam engine lubricator would not do, because mechanical lubricators are used for other things too. I am not sure what to suggest just now. Also, a Detroit lubricator is a displacement lubricator, while a Wakefield is mechanical. Globbet (talk) 18:30, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- Wakefield made both mechanical (perhaps best known), but also displacement lubricators. Andy Dingley (talk) 20:35, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

So, is this a lubricator?
editSo, is this also a mechanical lubricator, or is it something else? - Jmabel | Talk 05:53, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
- Looks like the container for a crank-pin lubricator: check this out to show the whole item. Perhaps not really interesting when not in context: it's just a glass jar. --Old Moonraker (talk) 06:34, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, that would be the context. Any idea how the photo should be categorized? - Jmabel | Talk 07:34, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
- I've just worked out what the other item is: it looks like a centrifugal governor, which I've taken the liberty of adding. the other Commons cat is "Steam engine lubricators". --Old Moonraker (talk) 07:57, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, that's what the other item is. Sorry I didn't say so, I knew that, I just didn't think enough of it was visible here to be interesting. The shot was mostly for aesthetic purposes, in any case, but I felt we should try to be clear what it is. Thanks. - Jmabel | Talk 18:41, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
- Interesting: Sorry, I was paying no attention the aesthetic in my comment above. --Old Moonraker (talk) 21:06, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
