The Adventure of the Speckled Band

edit

The reference to Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Adventure of the Speckled Band", which features the (supposedly) banded krait snake as the killer, albeit trained by a doctor to kill his step daughter so that he will inherit her money is misleading. In the story, the snake is referred to as a swamp adder, a species that lived only in Conan Doyle's imagination. There is no point whatsoever in mentioning the story here. Enhandle.

Unsourced statements

edit

A large number of unsourced statements have been dropped in my rewriting the article. I have added authenticated information supported by footnotes and references to Boulenger, Malcolm Smith and Daniel, which I possess.

The statements deleted are :-

  • Bungarus fasciatus is a highly venomous ......
  • Though very venomous ...... though at night they are much more active and widely considered to be more dangerous then.
  • B. fasciatus venom is neurotoxic and is about 10 times or more potent than cobra venom.[citation needed] However, it rarely bites, and few deaths have been attributed to it, though those few bites that do occur are often fatal as antivenin is not commonly available.

If these are sourced they can be rewritten into the text. AshLin 13:50, 20 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Another statement removed

Dr. Joe Slowinski was on expedition in Burma (now Myanmar)in 2001. Without looking to see what type of snake was in a bag brought to him by natives, he reached in and took hold of the snake. Sadly, it was B. fasciatus or the Banded Krait. He was said to have replied, as the snake was biting into his finger, "Oh god, it's a F%%^&*$G Krait" He was kept alive for thirty hours by artificial means before he died.

Distribution

edit

Could someone who knows India rationalise the different paragraphs on distribution within India, while citing the source reference for each of the regions mentioned? Notreallydavid (talk) 03:30, 30 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
