Expanding scope
editSo, I was attempting to add inline citations to the article since it currently lacks any of those, but the provided source in the reference section doesn’t seem to indicate that a battle took place in Ségou on March 10, 1861. On page 133, it says that "On 10 March ‘Umar led his army into Segu-Sikoro, which he conquered without difficulty because Ali Diara had fled, taking refuge somewhere on the borders of Masina. People who were left in the capital lost no time in making their submission to ‘Umar, who took possession of all the treasures accumulated in the palace of Ali Diara, the fama." This doesn't sound like a battle at all and more like the monarch fled and the city surrendered without a fight.
I suggest changing the date to March 10 - April 6, 1861 or April 6, 1861, as a battle did take place here. The source says that the Massina army reorganized and arrived at Segu on March 22, but the battle did not start immediately. Instead, the two sides harassed each other with small skirmishes over the following days. The battle occurred on April 6, 1861, resulting in the defeat of the Massina forces. After being defeated at Kogou and Touna, Ali Diara and the rest of his Bambara troops fled to Masina.
Also, describing the battle as "the beginning of El Hadj Umar Tall's conflict with the fellow Fula Jihad leader of Macina" doesn’t make sense as the Massina forces were already fighting with the Bambara troops by the time of this battle. The battle was, however, a significant escalation in the conflict, as Masina was housing a claimant to Segu.
Also Also, I couldn't locate anything about Ahmadu Tall becoming Faama in the source (if only there were inline citations to point me to the page :( :/ Wowzers122 (talk) 02:18, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
