Old discussion

This is not patent nonsense, see here. This page was deleted previously via an AFD discussion nearly two years ago. Admin, please compare this version to the deleted one to see if this version is changed enough from the last one to determine if this deserves a new AFD discussion. The article seems to reference enough sources that establish its notability, which invalidates the reason for its initial deletion. Still might be worth a look by an admin. Wronkiew (talk) 19:08, 4 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Either way, it still needs a lot of work. I could help out once it's determined that it's notable. KJS77 19:12, 4 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
There's some information on the football rivalry, for which the "Battle for the Bones" name and trophy were created, at Bhamwiki. (link). --Dystopos (talk) 04:57, 6 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Name

edit

I'm planning to do a bit of work here, and the name appears not to be appropriate. As the article itself says, only the football game is called the "Battle for the Bones" - and only since the trophy was introduced in 2006 - though the article discusses other sports as well. I plan on moving the article to UAB–Memphis rivalry to be inclusive.--Cúchullain t/c 15:14, 26 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Not really a "rivalry"

edit

The Memphis/UAB series is not really a rivalry. The history of the two schools is tied to the fact that former men's head basketball coach Gene Bartow coached for both schools. Memphis has completely dominated the series in basketball so there's not much of a rivalry there. The one in football was manufactured to generate interest in the game but neither school's fans particularly got fired up about it since neither team was particularly good in football most of those years. There is really no reason to have an article about the series since it has no more significance than any other conference game. Plus, Memphis will be joining the Big East so the series will likely be ended. Gregchilders 14:52, 17 February 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gregchilders (talkcontribs)

All that really matters is that there are reliable sources for the subject - and these do describe this as a rivalry. Deleting it would require it going through the [[WP:AFD|deletion process], though it's very unlikely to be deleted as it passes the threshold of notability right now. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future when the teams aren't playing consistently anymore; we may need to review the article again in the future.--Cúchullain t/c 20:24, 17 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Memphis has moved to the American Athletic Conference for the last two years and UAB has decided to end their football program. Even before that decision, both schools had made out their out of conference schedule for the next five years and did not include the other on it. This artificial rivalry does not exist, and cannot exist if one school has no football program at all. They have not played each other in basketball since 2013. --Gregchilders 14:56, 4 December 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gregchilders (talkcontribs)
