This article is pretty inaccurate. The area from the northern part of Black Beech Street and encompassing Birch Terrace, Rata Road, Gillespies Road and Bridge Road was known as Birchville for a long time before the development this article talks about was built. I was living there in the 60s and 70s and it was called Birchville before then.

This article is talking about a development that was called Parkdale. Development of Parkdale started in the mid 1970s and was well developed by 1980. In fact, the school opened in 1978. According to the school website it had a roll of 128 pupils. 30 years later its roll is 240 pupils which should give a fair idea of how developed the place was by 1980.

Did Parkdale get its name changed to Birchville at some point in time?

In answer to the question Did Parkdale get its name changed to Birchville at some point in time? I understand that a land developer sought to register Parkdale as a placename with the NZ Geographic Board in the 1980's. As a result the NZ Geographic Board clarified that the area was to be known as Birchville, the historic name given to the 1930's land developments along Blackbeech Street. Later, the Upper Hutt City Council decided that the suburb extents are all the way around Emerald Hill, from the main road north to the Hutt River. The names given to land developments such as Parkdale, Emerald Hill, Brown Owl were the names of subdivisions, not separate suburbs. This perhaps explains why Birchville Park is on Emerald Hill Drive, off the top end of Gemstone Drive, close to the Main Road North (SH2) while the Birchville Picnic Area is at the start of Gemstone Drive, where Akatarawa Road crosses the Hutt River. I have updated the article and tried to make it a bit more accurate. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 01:43, 5 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
