Eight years later, still waiting for some pronunciation guidance. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.207.215.209 (talk) 17:46, 18 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Could we have a pronunciation in IPA, please? arj 21:42, 11 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

The Malawi page links to Blantyre as the largest city in Malawi (box on the right). But the Blantyre page calls it the second largest. Can that be modified? I do not know which is correct. I would add a contradiction flag but do not know how. Timholland (talk) 03:28, 14 January 2009 (UTC)TimhollandReply

The page on Lilongwe says that Lilongwe has a population of 866,000, which is much larger than the population given here for Blantyre; yet both pages agree that Blantyre, not Lilongwe, is the most populous city in Malawi. Can someone resolve this with an appropriate correction? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 158.59.27.249 (talk) 17:22, 7 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Requested move

The result of the proposal was moved. Blantyre, Malawi to Blantyre and Blantyre to Blantyre (disambiguation) (not in that order though). per primary topic consensus below. --regentspark (comment) 15:44, 30 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Relisted. Most of the discussion seems to be based on the fact that the dab page only had two items. That is no longer true. So we need to see if this is in fact the primary topic. Vegaswikian (talk) 02:13, 14 September 2011 (UTC) WP:PRIMARYTOPIC and WP:TWODABS. The commercial capital of Malawi (pop. 700,000+) would appear to get the nod over a small town in Scotland. (pop 19,000). In terms of hits the Malawi city got 3,699 to only 1,002 for the Scottish town. With 77% of the total hits and 30 times the population, Malawi gets the primary topic nod. Only 23% would be inconvenienced by the moved, compared to the 100% that currently are. The Blantyre disambiguation page should either be moved to Blantyre (disambiguation) or just tossed altogether in favor of a hatnote to Scotland from Malawi. Purplebackpack 89≈≈≈≈ 04:58, 7 September 2011 (UTC) :On further thought, it's looking like we won't need a disamb page, so just delete the disam page at put a hatnote at the Malawi city Purplebackpack89≈≈≈≈ 17:36, 8 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • Support. The clear primary topic, as shown by significance and page views. If this RM is successful, the dab page should just be deleted per WP:TWODABS and a hatnote used instead. Jenks24 (talk) 18:05, 7 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • The Malawi city is certainly more notable than the one in Scotland. But a lot of things come up when you Google, so it is not exactly primary topic. Of course, there is no need for a DAB that has only two options. Blantyre can redirect to Blantyre, Malawi without changing the city's name. Kauffner (talk) 16:58, 8 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, but not all those things on Google have articles here. Simply having other things on Google doesn't justify denial of a primary topic; what justifies it is that a sizable percentage of Google hits are for multiple things that have WP articles. For example, when I Googled "Blantyre", a resort in Massachusetts (that doesn't have a WP article) figured prominently Purplebackpack89≈≈≈≈ 17:36, 8 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Agree with Purplebackpack. We do not disambiguate for prospective titles. When, and if, other article(s) are created with the common name of "Blantyre", then we should consider having a dab page, but not before then. Jenks24 (talk) 14:08, 11 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

I don't actually have anything new to say, but as there has been a dearth of comments since the relisting I will reiterate. After consulting Google and Bing, I conclude that topic No. 1 is the hotel in Massachusetts, No. 2 is the city in Malawi, and No. 3 is the city in Scotland. These are the Big Three, the likely desired topics, and nothing else is a major factor traffic-wise. We don't have an article about the hotel, so that leaves us with two topics. That some trivial stuff has been added to the DAB doesn't change anything. In short, the term "Blantyre" should direct to the Malawi city. However, a true primary topic should be the desired destination for at least 50 percent of the traffic, which is not the case here. Leaving the title as "Blantyre, Malawi" lets readers know that this article is not about the topic that the majority of them are interested in -- without making them actually click on it. Kauffner (talk) 18:51, 16 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

If you're reiterating, I'll reiterate that an article we don't have doesn't deny a primary topic. Purplebackpack89≈≈≈≈ 19:29, 16 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
