Why this article exists

edit

In case anyone is wondering, the butt fumble might not have passed Wikipedia:Notability (events) back in 2012, as it was the topic of only two or three news cycles: the days immediately following the event, and the interviews for the next weekend. However, August 2013 saw three separate news stories about the butt fumble, focusing on Sanchez's career, Moore's retirement, and the SportsCenter run. This provides plenty of material to write an encyclopedic article. Melchoir (talk) 20:31, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

I couldn't find any free images on Google or Flickr.

Of non-free images, the clearest image I could find is here. Unfortunately, the circumstances don't really fit the non-free image use rationales. Melchoir (talk) 00:11, 26 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the feedback! In the article, you can scroll down to the "References" section for a list of journalists who disagree. Melchoir (talk) 19:54, 22 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
You appear to be the singular champion of this dubious notability. Why don't we take it NOW to AfD and see if you can get traction from the community, what with a year's worth of it sticking around. --Mareklug talk 00:59, 1 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
...A year ago, I let this discussion trail off because I didn't want to bait anyone into starting an unnecessary AfD. Well, someone did it anyway, and the AfD was closed with a resounding "keep". This result is a strong answer to any lingering concerns over notability and traction from the community. Melchoir (talk) 20:05, 6 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

I was reading a new article on NFL.com, and the infamous "butt fumble game" was referenced. Wishing to know more, I searched, and as usual Wikipedia gave me the answer. Thanks, Wikipedia!76.103.116.3 (talk) 07:35, 3 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Proper noun

edit

Per WP:AT, Butt fumble is in reference to a particular game, so I think I'll go ahead and move the page to The Butt Fumble. This is much like The Comeback (American football). If there is objection afterward please let me know! --Dekema2 (talk) 02:04, 10 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for inviting discussion! I do wish to object. WP:AT recommends:

Avoid definite and indefinite articles: Do not place definite or indefinite articles (the, a, and an) at the beginning of titles unless they are part of a proper name (e.g. The Old Man and the Sea) or otherwise change the meaning (e.g. The Crown). They are noise words that needlessly lengthen article titles, and interfere with sorting and searching. For more guidance, see Naming conventions (definite and indefinite articles at beginning of name).

Fan names for football events aren't proper names, so the first exception doesn't apply. Sometimes, the definite article does change the meaning: examples include "The Catch", "The Drive" "The Fumble", "The Play", and as you observed, "The Comeback". Most of the time, though, the article isn't necessary: "Bluegrass Miracle", "Holy Roller", "Immaculate Reception", "Miracle at the Meadowlands", "Music City Miracle", and "Snow Bowl". That makes a ton of sense, I'm not sure why I wasn't thinking about that. --Dekema2 (talk) 03:46, 10 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Cool, shall I move the article back, then? Melchoir (talk) 04:17, 10 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
...done! Melchoir (talk) 05:22, 17 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Capitalization of "butt fumble"

edit

Hi, wiki editors. Although this play was originally referred to in lowercase by editors, time has changed the "butt fumble" to the "Butt Fumble." This page should be updated to reflect the overwhelming majority of media outlets that refer to the play with capital letters. When discussing the concept of a "fumble" as it pertains to the NFL rules, it is correct to use it in the lowercase. However, this article refers to a now-famous play specifically, and it should therefore be "Butt Fumble."

This opinion is also held by ESPN [1], CBS Sports [2], New York Daily News [3], Newsday [4], even the official NFL.com page refers to it as a proper noun [5] - and the list goes on. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 100.0.22.136 (talk) 18:36, 19 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Butt Fumble gameButt Fumble – Reverting undiscussed move. The game is notable only for the single play, so the topic should be the play and not the game. O.N.R. (talk) 12:06, 3 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

The “butt fumble” was 100% a consequence of Vince Wilfork “fork-lifting” Brandon Moores ass into Mark Sanchez face. Any description of the event not acknowledging that fact could only be written by bitt sore New Yorkers. This exposes all of Wikipedia as the fraud anymore with any appreciation of history understands. 2601:180:4100:99E5:6551:4822:37:3E77 (talk) 19:05, 6 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
