Another for the list

Minimum area
editWhy do we have a section for malls with an area of less than 70,000 m2? This is supposed to be list of the largest malls in Canada, but there appears to be no size-related inclusion criterion, with the "less than 70,000 m2" section acting as a coatrack for any mall anyone wants to add. We currently list one mall that is only 30,000 feet2 (less than 2,800 m2) and less than 1% of the size of the largest mall listed. I suggest that we pick a minimum size and remove anything smaller than that size. The 70,000 m2 that we use for the main table seems like a reasonable cutoff. Meters (talk) 20:27, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
- Archived discussion from 2006/07: Talk:List_of_largest_shopping_centres_in_Canada/Archive_1#Size_of_list had suggestions of minimum area of 1,000,000 square feet, and of just listing the 50 largest malls. Meters (talk) 04:05, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- We currently have 52 entries in the greater than 70,000 m2 table, and 167 in the less than 70,000 m2 table. Meters (talk) 04:13, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- Unopposed for 4 months, so trimmed malls less than 70,000 m2. Meters (talk) 07:18, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- Trimming the page is fine as long as the threshold follows a logical size order. I personally don't have any preference in terms of number of shopping malls that should be listed here but it doesn't make sense that Rockland Centre is listed here but Woodgrove Centre isn't. The shopping malls were already sorted by square feet in the source code so I have no idea why meters feet was used in the first place to sort the tables let alone to determine what stays here and what doesn't.76.64.176.155 (talk) 06:42, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
- Some of the areas claimed do not agree with those in the citations, and, as you pointed out in a summary, some of the conversions are incorrect. I'm currently verifying the cited sizes and the conversions.
- I do not know why the cutoff was originally chosen to be 70,000 sq m.
- I suggest that we also establish some minimum size criteria for the outlet malls and power centres, and make those tables consistent with that for the shopping malls. It does not make sense to have both sq ft and sq m in one table but only sq ft in the other tables. Meters (talk) 06:58, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

- Since landlords and secondary sources alike generally use the square footage in reference to shopping centres in Canada, I suggest that 750, 000 square feet be used as the threshold (instead of 70,000 m2) and to remove the irrelevant subtitle "Greater than 70,000 m2" and replacing it with something like "Shopping malls" since there is now only one table for shopping malls. The m2 column can either stay in the table as it currently is or removed altogether, but either ways it no longer what would be used to determine the threshold.
- Cutting out on the outdoor shopping centres is an interesting idea. But then again, these are different types of shopping centres with far less entries on the page than shopping malls so the status quo is fine too. No opinion on that. 76.64.176.155 (talk) 07:54, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for digging up the Edmonton City Centre data. I wasn't suggesting removing the outdoor shopping centres completely (I have no opinion on inclusion), just pointing out that it does not make sense not to have a minimum size for them (or for outlet malls). Without one we end up back in the same coat rack situation where editors can add any such centre.
- And why do outlet malls warrant a separate table from shopping centres? Meters (talk) 08:43, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
- My guess is someone must have thought that outlets were significantly different than "Outdoor lifestyle and power centres" to warrant their own table. I'm not opposed about outlets being merged with the rest of the outdoor shopping centre table. A minimum size for outdoor shopping centres is fine. I don't have a preference for any specific threshold. 76.64.176.155 (talk) 09:08, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

Edmonton City Centre
editThis entry needs significant work. The supposed citation for its area is a dead link for a completely different mall, and the bottom floor was converted to parking ca. 2017, so the original area and number of stores will be incorrect. Meters (talk) 07:06, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
- Resolved. Current fact sheet shows it is too small to list. Meters (talk) 08:33, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
