Both Chūō Line and Jungang Line (disambiguation) are disambiguation pages for transport infrastructures. All 3 disambiguation pages combined is still relatively small compared to other bigger disambiguation pages on English Wikipedia. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk · contri.) 04:44, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Sameboat: is Chūō Main Line actually called "Central Line" by anyone? I note the article is "Chūō Main Line" not "Central Main Line". Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 17:50, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Shhhnotsoloud: It's a common practice in Japan to have both literal translation and romaji (transliteration) squeezed in one single term like Center Kita Station (lit. Center North station) and Center Minami Station (lit. Center South station). However, the whole point of wiki disambiguation page is not just a collection of articles with perfectly identical name, but similar enough that readers who are not familiar with the official translation of the foreign term could expect a different but sensible translation. If we think it that way, even "Chuo Main Line" is qualified to be included in "Central line" without further redirecting to another disambiguation page, the latter to me serves absolutely no benefit to either editor or reader. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk · contri.) 05:30, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
- I should add that in English translation, Japanese usually retains the transliteration of the positions/directions: Higashi/To (east), Minami/Nan (south), Nishi/Sei (west), Kita/Boku (north), Chuo/Chuu (center), Ue/Kami (up), Shita/Shimo (down), but literal translation (treated like a proper noun) for locations like "Center (センター)" in the "Center Kita/Minami stations" I mentioned earlier. This supports my argument that these romajis in terms originated from Japan should be treated in a literal sense, instead of like a proper noun/toponym, at least in our disambiguation pages. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk · contri.) 05:41, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
- Support, in light of the above. Thanks @Sameboat:. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 09:20, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
- Support. The argument that readers may come across "Central line" or the like in English translation and find themselves looking at an unhelpful DAB page, with the article they want hidden away among the see-alsos under another name altogether, is compelling. - Oppose merge; just switch the two country articles to WP:SIAs and list those Japan and Korea pages in the railway sections. That means that those linked through the term Chūō Line (for example) won't have to wade through the many Central lines from other countries, while those linked through Central line can still see the Japanese (and Korean) pages. Klbrain (talk) 22:51, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose conversion to SIAs, unless whoever makes the conversion is prepared to monitor them for bad incoming links. SIAs always collect them. Narky Blert (talk) 07:57, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
