Chris Matthews (American football) → Chris Matthews (gridiron football) – He has played both American football and Canadian football. per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (sportspeople)#Gridiron football: "b. If he played multiple codes of football professionally, use (gridiron football)." Relisted. Joeykai (talk) 09:08, 2 July 2015 (UTC) Relisted. - Comment Noting that the title on 13 June 2015 was moved from Chris Matthews (gridiron football) to Chris Matthews (American football) by Mosmof[1]. Therefore, Chris Matthews (gridiron football) was the last stable title.—Bagumba (talk) 06:05, 13 June 2015 (UTC)
- Weak oppose By the letter of the guideline, yeah, that would be correct. But this guy had one season in Canadian football. He's American, played American football before that season, and it looks like he'll play American football for many more years. (American football) just seems like the more likely search term, since his primary claim to notability comes from his playing of American football—though I suppose one season of professional Canadian football would be enough to establish notability on its own. --BDD (talk) 19:13, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
- He played two seasons of Canadian football and won a major CFL award. It should be (gridiron football).Joeykai (talk) 20:51, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
- Fair enough. I just looked at the infobox and thought 2012-13 meant one season. --BDD (talk) 13:12, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

- Comment - I made the move, forgetting he'd played in the CFL so I apologize for that. Still, I'm not a fan of the term "gridiron" since I don't believe it's a commonly used term on either side of the border (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). Would it be wrong to simply say Chris Matthews (football player), since there doesn't appear to be a soccer player by that name (yet)? Mosmof (talk) 14:29, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
- Exactly—"gridiron football" is fine as an umbrella term for an international encyclopedia, but it's pretty uncommon, at least in North America. I don't think (football player) is a very good idea, though. It's not consistent with other qualifiers, as WP:D prescribes. --BDD (talk) 15:33, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
- Also, those folks across the pond seem to define "football" differently from how we do. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:45, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
- Yeah, but "football player" generally refers to the North American kind and soccer players are "footballers". Plus, that football is association football, though that term is only more marginally common than "gridiron". Mosmof (talk) 23:37, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

- Support per nom. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:45, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose per BDD. Matthews is an American. He attended an American college. He now plays in the NFL, and for most people will be most remembered for his performance in the most recent Super Bowl. Sure he played two seasons in the CFL, but I really think this is a move we're better off ignoring since "gridiron football" isn't a very common term these days. Calidum T|C 21:25, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

Chris Matthews (American football) → Chris Matthews (gridiron football) – Also played Canadian football, WP:NCSP is pretty clear on this. The previous discussion didn't reach a consensus, but it's been a year, so perhaps one can be reached now. ~ RobTalk 21:43, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
- @BU Rob13: Don't you mean Chris Matthews (gridiron football)? WP:NCSP says to use gridiron football when someone has played both codes professionally. -- Tavix (talk) 23:44, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
- @Tavix: Thanks for the catch. I definitely did mean gridiron. ~ RobTalk 00:03, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
- That's what I figured. With that, I will support. -- Tavix (talk) 00:14, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
