There's no indication from historical documents that Christopher Levett of York ever used the spelling Leavitt. He was known sometimes, though, as Levet. During the era in which Levett lived, orthography varied enormously. The name of adventurer Walter Ralegh, for instance, was spelled about 25 different ways during his lifetime -- but never as 'Raleigh,' the spelling we recognize today.
