Communities for CAs

Should the notes section of the cities table contain listing of communities that are included in their respective census agglomerations (or, for Calgary and Edmonton, the Metropolitan areas)? For the metropolitan areas, this information is included in the separate articles, but there are no articles on the census agglomerations. --Qyd (talk) 14:58, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

Agreed. I recall there being pages on the Statistics Canada website that present all municipalities within each CA. Once found, we could embed links to these pages in the notes column for the applicable city. --Hwy43 (talk) 17:11, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

Inline external links are usually avoided (WP:EL#External links section), I don't think that they should be added to a table, tables are for statistics, and links to Wikipedia articles, but it could be helpful in the explanation of what they are. 117Avenue (talk) 23:44, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

• Support to bring consistency in naming conventions among all Alberta community-related list articles. If executed, I would also like to see the following:

List of Alberta municipal districts → List of municipal districts in Alberta;

List of Alberta Indian reserves → List of Indian reserves in Alberta;

List of Alberta settlements → List of settlements in Alberta;

Specialized municipalities of Alberta → List of specialized municipalities in Alberta; and

Designated places of Alberta → List of designated places in Alberta.

Alternately, all Alberta community-related list articles could be moved using the article naming convention of List of Alberta X, where X = the community type. --Hwy43 (talk) 01:57, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

I support designated places (because I forgot it needed to be moved too). But I oppose specialized municipalities, with a list of five, it is more content then it is a list. Municipal districts and Indian reserves are areas rather than communities, and I don't think it needs to follow the same conventions. 117Avenue (talk) 04:48, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Specialized municipalities: agree for the time being until such time as more municipalities in Alberta change their status to specialized municipality.

Municipal districts and Indian reserves: disagree based on the recent discussion associated with renaming List of communities in Alberta. It was determined that communities was the appropriate overarching term to describe all the municipalities and unincorporated places listed within that article. As such, they should be subject to the same conventions to be consistent with the other Alberta municipality lists proposed for moves and with the content of List of communities in Alberta. Municipal districts and Indian reserves are rural communities that are large in area and small population densities while cities, towns, villages and summer villages are urban communities that are smaller in area and have larger population densites, in comparison. --Hwy43 (talk) 02:46, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Minor error in city list

I joined in 2006 and made maybe a few edits back then, but always scared to make any on a real page for not having read some guideline, or not knowing exactly how it should be changed, as is the case with this page.

The actual table of cities listed, under the heading… "List" (surprise!) The 2nd city (Beaumont) and 3rd city (Brooks) have notes [AB 1] and [AB 2], respectively. Both of the notes state that the given city is the smallest city by land area in Alberta. (and of course the notes 1 and 2 below are presumably the same text, linked on hover, they conflict word for word.

Since the land area is also listed in the table, it's clear that Beaumont is the actual smallest - but, since it also notes that Beaumont is Alberta's newest city, incorporated on January 1, 2019, it's easy to see how it was missed.

If I just edited the page, and took out the note and link from Brooks, the page would stand correct. However, since the 3rd largest city is noted, do we want to list the 3 smallest as well?

I haven't checked the whole thing, but noticed another error just now - Chestermere has the note [AB 4] which states that it is Alberta's newest city, incorporated on January 1, 2015. Clearly from above, that is no longer true either.. So would I just take out the part after 1993 and change the following comma to a period?

I know, everybody makes mistakes, but until I've completely read all the various relevant terms, guidelines, etc. I'm just paranoid about making mistakes.

Also, it may be weeks before I get a chance to come back to do it proper like, so someone who knows and could fix it in 3 minutes, please feel free. Otherwise I'll come back when I can and fix it best as I can.

 Done UnRheal, the Chestermere note has been fixed and the smallest city has been corrected to Wetaskiwin actually. See the revised Beaumont note for why. To briefly elaborate, Beaumont annexed land in 2017 and more than doubled in size as a result. Unfortunately we cannot edit the Land area (km²) column as the data is derived from the 2016 federal census until the land areas are updated in 2022 when the forthcoming 2021 federal census results are published. Error corrected

Anonymous IP edits often get reverted automatically, so in case it vanishes, I corrected the "AB 1" footnote on Beaumont. It originally said the city increased its area to 2400 sq. km in 2017. If that was true, it would be 3 times the size of Calgary. In fact, according to the cited document, it increased in area to just shy of 2400 hectares. 70.73.90.119 (talk) 03:58, 24 October 2019 (UTC)
